Decisive Hearing for Dr. Al-Arian Next Friday
There will be a decisive hearing in Dr. Sami Al-Arian’s case on Friday, January 16, 2009. It is expected that the judge will rule on dozens of motions, among them, the validity of the immunity order which led to the current contempt charges against Dr. Al-Arian.
At the hearing, Judge Leonie Brinkema will either set a date for the trial or dismiss the charges altogether. It is thus vital that as many of Dr. Al-Arian’s supporters attend as possible.

Israel’s Internet Mercenaries are on high-alert [DIGG | REDDIT]:
I know for a fact that there are Israeli “informants”, IDF foot-soldiers patrolling our face-book group “Muslim DIGG club” in order to send a battalion of online mercenaries to “bury” our “dugg” posts. What does that mean? Just like you can DIGG a post’s popularity, our enemies of truth and information can BURY it.
Now, there is evidence that this is a wider “internet-battle” pitching peddlers of truth and facts (us) against peddlers of Israeli propaganda (the enemies):
The hasbara brigade strikes again! You always hear about Israeli attempts at media manipulation. Everyone knows it’s going on but usually the process happens through cyber insurgents like those involved with Giyus (and its media monitoring software, Megaphone). Now, we know that the Israeli foreign ministry itself is orchestrating propaganda efforts designed to flood news websites with pro-Israel arguments and information.
The following were identified as “target sites”: the Times, the Guardian, Sky News, BBC, Yahoo!News, Huffington Post, and the Dutch Telegraaf. Also targeted were other media sites in Dutch, Spanish, German and French considered critical of the invasion.

Judge Sets March 9 Trial Date for Dr. Sami Al-Arian
At a hearing this morning at the U.S. District Court in Alexandria, VA, Judge Leonie K. Brinkema denied defense motions to dismiss criminal contempt charges against Dr. Sami Al-Arian, and set a trial date of March 9, 2009.
One of the motions Judge Brinkema dismissed argued that the charges against Dr. Al-Arian should be dismissed because Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Kromberg had unilaterally added additional language to the charges beyond what Congress had stipulated. In an earlier hearing Judge Brinkema had expressed some shock at Krombergโs action, but today ruled that, while she found it “unwise,” it was not grounds for dismissal.
Judge Brinkema also rejected the governmentโs request that the jury for Dr. Al-Arianโs trial be anonymousโi.e., that each juror be identified by number only. Emphasizing that Dr. Al-Arian, who currently is restricted to his familyโs apartment in Arlington, Virginia, had fully complied with the terms of his release to his daughterโs custody, the federal judge stated that his trial would be open and accessible.
Kromberg and Jonathan Turley, Dr. Al-Arianโs attorney, were instructed to try to arrive at a joint account of the history leading up to the current charges, so that the jurors would have some context in which to consider them. If the attorneys were unable to do so, the judge added, she would prepare one herself, since much of that history is part of the public record. Among the events Judge Brinkema cited was the fact that in his earlier trial in Tampa, FL, Dr. Al-Arian had not been convicted of a single terrorism charge against him, and that the charges on which the 12-person jury was hung were 10-2 in favor of acquittal.
Nevertheless, the judge emphasized, the upcoming trial would not be about terrorism, but only the current charges of criminal contempt of court.
Judge Brinkema granted a defense motion that Dr. Al-Arian could use the โadvise of counselโ defense. He can therefore argue that he signed a plea agreement which did not specifically state that he was not required to testify in other trialsโthe reason behind the criminal contempt chargesโbecause his attorney at the time had informed him that those words were not necessary.

i pray that Allah will bring freedom quickly to all of the Muslims still unjustly held in American prisons and detention centers all over the world — now that an era of gross abuse by the Bush Administration has passed, let it truly pass. let the prisoners held without cause be released, let those whose imprisonment has far exceeded any cause be released, let those who have been injured, tortured, or killed in detention be known to the world, and let those injustices not go unpunished.
