Toqa Badran is a native New Yorker and PhD candidate at Georgetown Universityโs Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies. She has an MA in Islamic studies from Columbia University, and a BA from the college in Political Science. Deeply interested in the linguistic effects of shared religious belief, namely Islam, she has studied language reform in Soviet Central Asia, Turkish and Uyghurโ in addition to her native Arabic. Often, her work explores the maintenance of Islamic ethics within the violence of colonialism.
