The purpose of working and having a career is not simply to make halal money. It is also about making things better, standing up for what is right, and having the courage to call out injustice.

Just trying to make more halal money won’t stop you from becoming another Muslim doormat.

A career can be about more than making halal money so you can give lots of sadaqah. It can be an opportunity to correct what is wrong, improve the lives of others, and make a meaningful difference. You want to send a message: “You don’t mess with a Muslim.”

I would also take every opportunity to move into positions of greater responsibility because that gives you the ability to influence more people.

For example, as a classroom teacher, you may directly affect 20 or 30 students. As a superintendent, you could influence the education and lives of thousands of students.

The goal should not simply be to make more money or have more time for our families. We should also ask: What can I change? Who can I help? What can I make better?

When those questions become part of our priorities, our understanding of success changes as well.
