Revive a Sunnah: An Easy and Beloved Dhikr

Published

Part of the Ramadan plan at MuslimMatters is to post a small sunnah every day that we can work towards implementing. Inshallah if after 30 days we can implement these small daily things in our lives, that is 30 new ways of following the footsteps of our Rasool (saw) that we might not have been doing before. So with that, we will kick things off with one of my favorites.

No matter how many times I read the following hadith, I continue to be amazed by it. If someone implements this one act of remembrance into their daily routine, it can bring us the continued and vast forgiveness of our Lord, Ar-Rahmaan. I think about the sins I have done not just in the past, but just in a single day, and reflecting upon this hadith truly makes my heart feel that the forgiveness of Al-Ghaffaar is close at hand.

Allah’s Apostle (saw) said, “Whoever says, ‘Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,’ one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea. (Bukhari)

The Prophet said, “(There are) two words which are dear to the Beneficent (Allah) and very light (easy) for the tongue (to say), but very heavy in weight in the balance. They are: ‘Subhan Allah wa-bi hamdihi’ and ‘Subhan Allah Al-‘Azim.” (Bukhari)

“The most beloved of speech according to Allah is when the servant says, ‘Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi’ (How Transcendent is Allah and we praise him!).” (Muslim)

“The most beloved of speech according to Allah the Most High is that which Allah chose for his Angels: Subhana Rabbi wa bihamdihi, Subhana Rabbi wa bihamdihi, Subhana Rabbi wa bihamdihi.” (Tirmidhi, Sahih)

And because it is light on the tongue, it’s one of the best dhikr when you’re working out :)

Talib Al Habib has a nasheed about it, in his new album “Rahma”:

Sis Hafsa, you beat me to it! I was going to post the YouTube link to that nasheed… I’ve played it so much that my little brother has taken to singing it also (which is good, because it’s taught him that particular dhikr!).
