Open Thread Sunday 6-29-08
Bah, you Americans and your incorrect way of writing out dates! It should be Open Thread Sunday 29-06-2008. dd-mm-yyyy makes a lot more sense than m-dd-yy - but seeing as I’m part of the Brit minority on MM, I have to concede defeat. The colonies aren’t what they used to be… {sad face}
Anyway, I’ve been reading a lot of moving poetry about the blogosphere this week (one example), so I thought I’d dig through the MM archives and see what we have to offer:
Two short poems that I particularly enjoyed: Consolation & Faces Unveiled
And some much deeper contemplation in store as Abu Aaliyah (another MM Brit - represent!) muses over a Rudyard Kipling Poem.
I now hand the rest of the thread over to you.
Ahem.
As you were…

Don’t give up on fighting for our date so quickly.
Our methodology makes waaay more sense.
The British date possesses a logical progression not present in the American version. We step upwards in unit size. Small then big - day, month then year.
It’s a proper sequence!
I can’t even comprehend how a nation could come to the conclusion that months should precede days.
We use YYYY/MM/DD most of the time. Not sure if that’s a national thing, or just what we do in “the industry” - but it makes a lot more sense than MM/DD/YYYY. Plus, this ensures that dates are sorted properly in an alphabetical system.
Anyway, on to the actual point … does MM plan on making poetry a more common feature? You’ve had a few already, but they seemed somewhat “out of place”…
I ran across this today:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/29/us/politics/29hussein.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&ref=todayspaper&adxnnlx=1214763933-uDfSIXDzlo/E77qQc6F2Qw
I support dd/mm/yy 100%! Don’t give up! It’s simply the most logical way to do it. Most people have the year and month figured out
And I’m American too. I don’t support the illogical systems we use here (metric for life)!
Have I inadvertently started the British revolution on MM? How ironic. haha
Shafi, thanks for the link… it reminds me of kuffiyeh day. I guess if that had been connected to the US elections, we could have been published in the NY Times too, hehe. Alhamdulillah, it shows the power of social networking, especially when it involves a simple act. It would be great if people actually investigated the root of the name Hussein though, may Allah be pleased with him, and bless the Prophet and his family.
@Faraz… for poetry to be a staple feature, we’d need to have some more poets join the MM ranks. If anyone is interested in such a role, please contact us with some of your work.
AsSalamu Alaykum Everyone,
Sorry to be a litle late, but…
Is anyone here going to the ICNA Conference this week being held in Connecticut? (July 4-6)
Nihal, timely question.
Sheikh Yasir was asking us if anyone will be there to blog for MM… so if you and/or others are going, please let us know if you can blog the events there… take some pics, etc.
Can anything be done to stop it:
