Charity Week 2009: Raising Money for Orphans Worldwide

Published

Those of you who attend university in the UK may already be familiar with the term “Charity Week“. For the rest of you non-student types, here’s a brief explanation:

Charity Week is a grass-roots projects started in 2004 by a small team of London University students. Organized by the University of London Union Islamic Society (ULU ISoc) and in partnership with Islamic Relief, it remains one of the most successful and powerful projects ULU ISoc organizes to date. The initial aim was to raise awareness amongst the youth and communities about the tragic state of orphans around the world.

Countless Universities take part in Charity Week all over Britain, and over 5 years have raised a magnificent total of £931,000! 100% has been donated to Islamic Relief’s Orphans Campaign with ZERO admin fees. Therefore every penny is delivered directly to orphans and, amongst many things, is what makes Charity Week so special and loved across the nation!

Charity Week began on Monday 19th October, and as you can see from the following video, my own Islamic Society, Imperial College ISoc, has been busy trying to raise cash for this worthy cause from Day 1 – even donning cartoon costumes to appeal to their fellow students!

Alhamdulillah, we're at over 850 supporters. Help us get to 900 supporters this month. All it takes is a small gift from a reader like you to keep us going, for just $2 / month.

The Prophet (SAW) has taught us the best of deeds are those that done consistently, even if they are small. Click here to support MuslimMatters with a monthly donation of $2 per month. Set it and collect blessings from Allah (swt) for the khayr you're supporting without thinking about it.

I humbly ask you to donate whatever you can spare to this amazing drive. It has barely been a month since Ramadan left our homes, but the spirit of generosity should be present all year round – especially when it comes to caring for the most vulnerable amongst us.

You can easily donate online via the official Charity Week Just Giving websitehttp://www.justgiving.com/cwlondon2009. Remember to write “IMPERIAL COLLEGE” in the comments section of the donation form, so the money is assigned to the correct account.

Please also leave a comment on this post (anonymously if you wish), to encourage others to donate after you (an easy way to multiply your reward). JazakumAllah khair!

Narrated Sahl bin Sa’d: The Prophet said, “I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this,” putting his index and middle fingers together. [Sahih Bukhari]

Dr Mehzabeen b. Ibrahim joined MuslimMatters as a blogger in late 2007 under the handle 'iMuslim', whilst still a struggling grad student. Since then, she has attained a PhD in Molecular Biology and a subsequent Masters in Bioinformatics, and now works as a specialist in this field for a well-known British, medical charity, masha'Allah. Somewhere in between she found the time to get married, alhamdulillah. She likes to dabble in photo and videography, a sample of which can be found on her personal blog: iMuslim.tv.

Who will be the first to donate, and thus receive a copy of the reward of everyone that follows? :)

Hmm… I don’t mind people giving to both – but not one to the exclusion of the other! ;)

It’s “quid”, i.e., 50 quid, but I’d be happy to start a campaign to make it “quids” in honour of your generosity, masha’Allah. ;)

Btw, you’ve been matched! Cough up, ‘bruv’. :D

    Salams,

I have to say that I’m not sure if people, especially in the States, could gage from the above video links the extent of money raised by the kids at Universities in that one week (usually four days) up and down the UK. What type of stuff they go through, the hours, mashallah – and to add to that, the type of brotherhood and sisterhood they they get out of it.

The link below will probably come close to giving a decent idea of what it really involves.

    ^^ Main clip

Athough you’ll get the figures of how much was raised in the various years by the first few seconds of the video clip, it’s only after 3:25 that you see the activities. In between is also of great value!

If you are inspired by anu of it, please donate as described above and leave comment for University College London (UCL) – where I did my post-grad;)

But I must also add… get your own blog for plugging UCL! :P

During the years I was working on the issue of as will solve a problem of orphans. The purpose of my research of last years was the ways of the assistance achievement for those who do feel aloof from parent’s assistance. My research has shown that, Orphans our children because, at them do not have parents. Avoidance of the orphan starvation, to give them qualified medical care, education and sweet home for them; it is a main objective of our organization. I am confident, it’s vital to lend a helping hand to a human-being initially, if he is in trouble and do the utmost to help him to become independent earn for his life without others aid. My research has shown that many people on the earth do have the desire to support others, but sometimes don’t know in what way to do it. Our Non-Governmental Organization “Save The Future Generation” works on above-mentioned issue. It helps people to discover each other, to exchange with experience and learn from each other how to overcome the difficulties problem for orphans. Please visit our site http://www.sfge.org on our site, you can find a lot of helpful information.
Thanks a lot for your help.
    Best Regards
