As-salaamu alaykum,
Many of us enter the masjid before the time of Iqama (establishment of prayer) – or at least, we should. :) But do we know how valuable that time truly is? Do we know some of the Sunnan (Prophetic practices) that are performed during this blessed period? I will be sharing with you two beautiful ahadith that you can start applying for the rest of your life, in shaa Allah.
1) In Sahih Abi Dawood, Prophet Muhammad (salla Allahu alayhe wa sallam) said:
Keep supporting MuslimMatters for the sake of Allah
Alhamdulillah, we're at over 850 supporters. Help us get to 900 supporters this month. All it takes is a small gift from a reader like you to keep us going, for just $2 / month.
The Prophet (SAW) has taught us the best of deeds are those that done consistently, even if they are small.
Click here to support MuslimMatters with a monthly donation of $2 per month. Set it and collect blessings from Allah (swt) for the khayr you're supporting without thinking about it.
“إن الدعاء لا يرد بين الأذان والإقامة فادعوا”
“The Duaa is not rejected between Adhan (call to prayer) and Iqama (establishment of prayer) so make Duaa.” Allahu akbar! We need to start utilizing this blessed time to ask Allah for all goodness in this life and the afterlife. Also, remember me and the MuslimMatters in your Duaa :)
2) In Sahih Al-Bukhari, Prophet Muhammad (salla Allahu alayhe wa sallam) said:
“بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلاَةٌ ، بَيْنَ كُلِّ أَذَانَيْنِ صَلاَةٌ ) ، ثُمَّ قَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ : (لِمَنْ شَاءَ))”
“Between every two Adhans (Adhan and Iqama) there is a prayer. Between every two Adhans there is a prayer. And then he said at the 3rd time (for whoever wants).” This is a prayer which the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhe wa sallam) highly recommended to all of us, and he wouldn’t recommend it unless it had a lot of benefit.
There is no doubt, in shaa Allah, that if we sincerely implement the aforementioned ahadith before the time of iqama, our concentration (khushoo’) during obligatory prayers would be affected positively. With that being said, let’s not waste the valuable seconds before Iqama on things that can be done after prayer. Be patient and seize the moment!
May Allah bless you and accept from you. Feel free to share this post with your friends and family.
Wassalaamu alaykum.

Jazakal Allahu khayr brother Majed.
That was a good reminder.
If I may add two other duas (invocations) that I believe are very important. In my humble layman opinion, I think the duas mentioned below will set the precedent for one to attain the focus in remembering those important moments when we need to seek our Creator’s Mercy and Blessings.
Upon entering the Masjid, whether it is before the adhan (call to prayers) or afterwards, one is recommended to say the dua as recorded in this hadith:
(1) It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah salalAllahu aleyhi wa salim said: “When anyone of you enters the mosque, let him send peace upon the Prophet, then let him say: “Allahumma aftahli abwaba rahmatik [O Allah, open to me the gates of Your mercy.). And when one leaves, let him send peace upon the Prophet and say: “Allahumma ‘asimni minash-shaitini rajim” (O Allah, protect me from the accursed satan).” [Sahih Muslim – Mosques & the Congregations, hadith No. 773]
If someone made good time, and caught the adhan as it was being called, they should repeat the words of the adhan with the mu’addhin, and after the adhan has finished, one is recommended to say the duaa recorded in this hadith:
(2) Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah radiyal Allahu anhu: Allah’s Messenger salalAllahu aleyhi wa salim said, “Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, ‘Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-da’ watit-taammati was-salatil qaa’imati, aati Muhammadanil-wasilata walfadilata, wab’-athu maqaman mahmudanil-ladhi wa’-adtahu [O Allah! Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be offered, grant Muhammad Al-Wasilatu wa Al-Fadilah (highest position in Paradise, extra degree of honor, and the privilege of intercession) and raise him to Maqam Mahmud (the eminent station of praise and glory), that You have promised], then my intercession for him will be permitted on the Day of Resurrection”. [Sahih Bukhari – The Book of Adhan, hadith No. 614)
I have caught myself getting distracted right after the adhan is called sometimes – greeting a friend at the mosque, or even uselessly just checking my phone – subhanalAllah! It is too easy to lose sight of the importance of the moment. I ask Allah to give us all better habits.
Insha Allah, observing duas like these and similar ones, would definitely enhance one’s dua-making-mojo. I hope we all become more proficient in remembering to ask to Allah azah wa jal, in those special times at the mosque.
May Allah guide us all to righteousness and piety.
Wa salaamu aleykum
