As a Muslim who has lived in BC, Quebec, and Ontario (all at the same time!) with future in-laws in Alberta, the BC Muslim Community is really not so backwards! You should feel thankful for the community you have. It’s young still, but insha-Allah will go a long way with the quality of people you have there.
5 Things I loved about British Columbia
1) Cleanest Masjid politics I’ve ever seen. BCMA, probably due to being pretty small, is very well organized and efficient. I like the work they’ve done with the schools.
2) The “Islamic Cultural Expo” at Vancouver Art Gallery. Praying an outdoor Jum’ah right in the core of downtown Vancouver was one of my favourite experiences there.
3) Beautiful Mosques – the new Burnaby Mosque is the most beautiful in Canada, in my opinion. And there are lots of other beautiful ones as well that are on par with the best ones from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Calgary.
4) Much better diversity in the Muslim community than Toronto and Montreal. Yes, there are way more Muslims in Toronto, but they’re much more divided along linguistic and national borders. I found most of the Vancouver mosques I went to (with the except of Surrey) were very diverse, and everyone seemed to get along.
5) Best halal Chinese food in Canada.
Insha-Allah, this event goes well, but don’t take BC for granted! It’s a beautiful place with beautiful people masha-Allah.

I have to agree with point 5… not that I’ve tasted halaal Chinese food anywhere else, but what we have DOES rock! AlHamdulillah :)
BTW, Baba Ali is coming to the conference after all! I just got the confirmation email…
I won’t be able to attend, but insha’Allah will have a couple of my friends acting as my eyes and ears :D If any MM readers go, please do let us know how it turns out!
