MuslimMatters is appalled and horrified by the shocking revelations surrounding Wisam Sharieff, who has been accused of despicable acts, including conspiracy to produce child pornography. As documented so far, these alleged actions are an unspeakable betrayal of trust and an abhorrent abuse of power, violating the core values of our faith, our community, and basic human decency.
For many of us, this betrayal feels deeply personal. We are disturbed and profoundly disgusted, as some in our community may have once studied with or respected Sharieff. To now confront the possibility that he may have manipulated his position to cause such harm is revolting and distressing. We stand united in our condemnation of these alleged actions and any other form of abuse, especially when directed toward the vulnerable and innocent. Such actions are not only criminal but a severe violation of the ethical principles we strive to uphold, dictated by the Quran.
MuslimMatters strongly encourages anyone affected by these or similar acts to come forward and report to relevant authorities immediately, and we commit to offering any support necessary. The courage of those who speak out is vital in shining a light on these reprehensible actions, and we honor their bravery in standing up against such evils. The victim’s mother being involved in this abuse makes it especially reprehensible.

Effective immediately, MuslimMatters has severed all association with Wisam Sharieff. He has previously been interviewed on MuslimMatters and we have published transcriptions of his lectures. We are committed to creating a safe, trustworthy, and supportive space for our online community, where abuses of trust are met with zero tolerance. Spiritual abuse, exploitation, and the betrayal of our community’s faith deserve the utmost condemnation, and we pledge to uphold our values of integrity, safety, and accountability.
We urge other organizations in the Muslim community who were closely associated with Sharieff to take a strong stance and consider creating an email or phone hotline for victims.
“O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives. Be they rich or poor, Allah is best to ensure their interests. So do not let your desires cause you to deviate ˹from justice˺. If you distort the testimony or refuse to give it, then ˹know that˺ Allah is certainly All-Aware of what you do.” [Surah An-Nisa; 4:135]
May Allah protect the innocent, uplift the oppressed, and grant justice to those who have been wronged.

We need to start talking about sex addiction and sexually compulsive behaviors in our community, and people need to seek help for this in their teens and early adult life before they commit aggregious horrible crimes later in life. Any person who struggles with sex addiction, knows that like any other addiction or compulsion such behaviors will always escalate, join a 12 step program they are aligned with Islam, especially sexaholics anonymous, nobody is immune to these behaviors, whether you’re an Imam or a professional of any type. Please seek help immediately, its better you’re talking to someone in the open who can help you and taking account of yourself, before someone else will take account of you because your behavior went out of control.
Astagfirullah! This is horrible! This is a breach of trust, an amanah! This has made me angry for the sake of Allah ! How dare Wisam do something like this? May Allah protect the Muslim Ummah from such scums and from being taken advantage of. Allah protect our hearts lest we divert and go astray. Aameen.
Our Deen is perfect and beautiful. It is not dependent on any preacher. We follow the Greatest Human to ever walk the face of this earth Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam and the Sahaba RadhiyAllahu ‘Anhum ‘Ajma’een.
The Quran will only affect a person if it goes to the heart and makes the person tear up. This is a warning from Allah for Quran schools when they hire Quran teachers. Don’t judge a book by its cover! A person can have an Ijaza in the 10 recitations, (which I understand he had), a whopping beard, wear a throwb and cap, and yet be a predator! The khawarij are a good example of such Quran reciters. I’d rather my children learn the Quran from a person who hasn’t even fully memorised the Quran, has no ijaza, small beard, wears a pant and shirt, makes a few mistakes, but loves the book of Allah!
Just to add, Quran schools cannot be blamed in any way shape, or form for such things. Who in her or his right mind could have predicted that an individual who has memorized the Quran verse, “Man Khaafa Maqama rabihee wa naha alnafsa un il-hawa,” Al_Naziat 79:40, in all ten readings, let alone the entire Quran, with an ijaza, and who knew Arabic, could have even thought of doing such a thing? Mind-boggling!
