Seek It Beautifully

Published

The first time I heard this hadith, I was struck by its beauty:

‘The holy spirit cast into my essence that no soul shall perish until it completes its lifespan and its provision, so fear Allah, and seek it beautifully. And do not let the delay of that provision cause you to seek it through disobeying Allah. For what is with Allah cannot be acquired except through obedience to Him.”

-Saheeh Al-Jami’, Al-Albaani

I heard this first in the field of transactions, that the Muslim should always bear in mind while living in a world infatuated with money –a world that fashions you to seek out money always- that they will never die until they’ve received everything that was written for them of provision. So the Muslim should seek out that money beautifully, because it’s coming to them.
Another provision that obsesses people is that of a partner. And this hadith gives comfort to the one who has been asked, “So when are we going to attend your wedding” so much that they might choke the next person who asks. That person who may hear the whisper of shaytan begin to get louder in their heart as a little bit of hope leaves it every year, and as their heart becomes empty of hope the whispers begin to echo, as voices in empty spaces tend to do. This statement of the Prophet ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) is for them,

“So fear Allah, and seek it beautifully”

What is written for you will surely come to you, and so when it arrives it can find you as the pure and gracious host who beautified your journey to it with patience and prayer, optimism and good thoughts about Allah, or it can arrive to you finding you jaded, doubtful and broken. Make your journey beautiful, and if there were mistakes along the way then make your repentance beautiful. Make it so perfect that if it were to be distributed amongst your community you would hope that it would be enough for all of them.

“And do not let the delay of that provision cause you to seek it through disobeying Allah. For what is with Allah cannot be acquired except through obedience to Him”

“We aim to get money for what it facilitates of security and prestige, we seek partners for completeness, happiness and progeny. But all of that is in the hands and control of Allahsubḥānahu wa ta'āla (glorified and exalted be He), and He made the recipe for it obedience to Him. If we follow another recipe then do we have anyone to blame for our stress and sadness but ourselves?

Good point. But highlight the more fundamental point that everything is from him. Even day to day “pointless” occurences. Even this comment.

Jazakum Allahu khairan very poignant masha-Allah. A great reminder for me as a mother to teach her children that provision should be sought for the pleasure of Allah and through His obedience only. May Allah give us all beautiful patience to we can sail through tough times that can occur while treading the path to Allah and may He make it so worth the pain and effort. Brother Siraaj Muhammad wrote a beautiful piece about why management systems fail and that was lack of that burning yes or reason to do things and that burning reason should be for Allah and Allah alone even the seemingly small things. This would put a lot of barakah in our life and work.
As a good exercise I find it very useful to write done the ‘why’ for every good goal or habit I want to achieve and write it down on a regular basis and write many many reasons or intentions. I find this very important and very useful.
