Alhamdulilah Spring is upon us! The birds are chirping, the trees are blossoming and wedding bells are ringing…and walima duffs are beating!
It’s not all non-Muslim marriage ceremonies this time of year. Three of my friends have had nikahs/walimas in the past few weeks – with more to come inshAllah! My family in Alexandria live across the street from a photo studio, and it seems that EVERY NIGHT from April ‘till Ramadan there’s a couple taking wedding pictures complete with accompanying orchestra. The MM universe, too, is no stranger to marriage fever.
Imam Zaid’s cross-post has definitely produced some lively discussion. Among the many thoughtful comments on gender norms and marriage, Br. Yawar’s stood out. His 25 years of marriage (25 years!!!) certainly gave him some insight into the “best practices” (a nod to the MBA minded brothers out there) between a husband and a wife. His recollections, too, were quite genuine:
I remember the strange warm glow when I was introduced for the first time as, ‘This is my husband.’ Never knew that there was so much pleasure in being ‘owned.’ My husband. Hmm!!

This quote reminded me of the famous hadith that all of us (non-married brothers especially!) are familiar with:
When a person gets married he has completed half of his religion, so let him fear Allaah with regard to the other half. (Al Bayhaqi)
As Yawar alludes to throughout his post, it’s the simple moments with your spouse that are so powerful. They give you greater consciousness of your deen and the strength to better implement the sunnah in your life.
