Ahmed Abu-Ali is serving 30 years in the ADX Supermax Prison, known as the Alcatraz of the Rockies. He is up for re-sentencing on July 27, 2009 at the Alexandria Courthouse–please come show your support.

Ahmed, a Muslim American Texan native, was arrested in the middle of an exam in June 2003 while he was studying abroad in Saudi Arabia. He was suddenly arrested and detained in jail for 22 months without charges or access to attorney, then sent back to the U.S., where he was tried and convicted for associating with terrorists on the basis of a false confession that was elicited by torture. The judge at his trial refused to allow evidence of possible torture to be presented.

Please come to the re-sentencing on July 27, 2009–given the new attitude about torture in the Obama administration, there is HOPE that his case could be reopened.

  • Really scary stuff happening in UK (Islamophobes, listen up): Non-Muslims turning to Sharia courts to resolve civil disputes
  • In a case last month a non-Muslim Briton took his Muslim business partner to the tribunal to sort out a dispute over the profits in their car fleet company. “The non-Muslim claimed that there had been an oral agreement between the pair,” said Mr Chedie. “The tribunal found that because of certain things the Muslim man did, that agreement had existed. The non-Muslim was awarded £48,000.”
  • Why aren’t the feminists, the Hirsis, the Manjis and other charlatans up in arms about men using their naked daughters Bihar, India to “embarrass gods”?  Why is a story of a slap on a woman in Saudi receive more attention than far worse, including murder in another part of the world? Keep in mind that not long ago another man in India beheaded his grand-daughter for a good harvest.
  • “They (villagers) believe their acts would get the weather gods badly embarrassed, who in turn would ensure bumper crops by sending rains,” Upendra Kumar, a village council official, said from Bihar’s remote Banke Bazaar town.
  • Could the hijab ban be coming to your locality in America soon?  Things are already happening in Oregan. Join CAIR and the Sikh community to protest this blatant violation of religious rights.
  • Oregon has had a law on the books for decades that states, “No teacher in any public school shall wear any religious dress while engaged in the performance of duties as a teacher.” Pennsylvania has a similar law.
  • We have all been hearing of the “corruption” arrests in NJ that knapped mayors, lawmakers and rabbis. What is somewhat muted that this wasn’t just plain ole corruption, where money exchanged hands. This involved the disgusting and lowly crime of human organ smuggling.
  • Those arrested included Levy Izhak Rosenbaum of Brooklyn, who was charged with conspiring to arrange the sale of an Israeli citizen’s kidney for $160,000 for a transplant for the informant’s fictitious uncle. Rosenbaum was quoted as saying he had been arranging the sale of kidneys for 10 years.
  • Of course, no recent open thread would be complete without mentioning Michael Jackson’s possible “love-child”, Omer Bhatti, who could have lo and behold, some Pakistani blood. Pakistan just finds its way into everything, doesn’t it?? We are just wondering when the circus is going to be over?  And why wasn’t this all news when MJ was actually alive?

    The height of hypocrisy and double-standards. Every politician is whisked away to Israel on “official money” or money from Israeli non-profits, but Ellison goes to Makkah, and the GOP hypocrites want to attack him!

    Disappointed in the Muslims United Against Malaria post. Didn’t get that many comments. Seems like Sh. Hamza is right, the ummah is in a state of coma.

      MR, the event is relatively distant. Muslims, in general, procrastinate till the last week to get excited. And remember this is something new that we are trying to excite the ummah about. It isn’t a sectarian issue, it isn’t a war-cry issue… it is a disease issue in a land that most of us have never seen. My point is that we need to sell this better. Why Africa? Why malaria? Why should Muslims care? Maybe a fact-page? A template that can go viral of why we need to support the event, beyond the video and flier and big names? Just playing the devil’s advocate.

      We’ll raise the flag again inshallah, as we get closer. It will also be ramadan soon, and most of us wake up from the 11-month coma for it :)

        We should do a marketing blitz for this in Ramadan in all masaajid around the nation. That’s when majority of the Muslims will be seen until they go back to sleep for another 11 months.

        I was sitting next to this christian guy in a flight to new york and he was talking about how the jehovah’s witnesses go to these countries with malaria and teach them sign language along with kufr.

        We really should push this hard insha’Allah.

      MashaAllah his recitation is beautiful.

      I couldnt help but teary up when it was announced at Ilm SSummit that he recieved a life sentence. His response was amazing, may Allah give him better life in the akhira in Jannatul Firdous.

      I pray that Allah protects all of our brothers in Islam.
