Coolest Nick Competition

Published

10002.jpgMuslim Apple is the Winner of our Book!

Now for something completely useless, for amusement, and just to prove that brothers in the editorial staff can write something other than ‘hard-hitting posts’… we will have a little competition for the best/coolest nickname in the blogosphere and last but not least, an actual prize! And the prize is… ‘He came to teach you your religion’, the book by Jamal Zarabozo. So, how does it work?

Some suggestions are listed below. Simply vote for one of them (ONLY one) OR tell us another one. As we get new suggestions, we’ll update this list. The owner of the nick nominated has to comment or at least have one comment on the MM blog. The suggestion has to be creative in order to make it to the list, so Cool_Muslim probably won’t get you in. ALSO, you have to explain the meaning/origin of your nick. We’ll keep this going for a week or two or until activity dies down, and the nick with the highest reader votes (includes you and us) wins. Simple enough? Let’s go then… here’s the list that will be constantly updated with votes:

• Muslim Apple {7 votes} WINNER
• McPagal {4 votes}
• Our own ‘AnonyMouse’ {4 votes}
• Philomantis {4 votes}
• inexplicabletimelessness {2 vote} (Hope I spelled it right :) )
• ExExBlogger {2 votes}
• iMuslim {1 vote} AND…
• Nuqtah {0 votes} –how could we have forgotten this one!
• Judge Dredd {0 votes}

Amad! What’s my name doing up there? Too funny. :D

If i don’t get at least one vote, i will cry.

{I’m trying for the sympathy angle – wink}

I’d like an explanation from ExExBlogger, about the origins of his/her name.

I think mine’s obvious… :)

lol, jazaks for the name appreciation! it was actually my sister who started calling me that a while ago. She said I was the chief of the McPagal clan, good times.

iMuslim: i usually got with the crazy/stupid definition, but ‘fool’ is far more concise :D

I think Philomantis is a creative name.

Philomantis has commented on one of brother Amad’s earlier posts regarding the authenticity of the hadeeth regarding seeking knowledge in Canada.

The name is composed of two parts: philo which means love/affinity for, and mantis which means Prophet. [SOURCE: Derived from his about page found here: http://philomantis.wordpress.com/about/%5D

lol I just noticed a typo. It’s supposed to read “the hadeeth regarding seeking knowledge in China.

May 17, 2007 at 10:24 PM

Yeah Canada… LOL! Didn’t even exist 1400 years ago… that’s how shallow it is! ;)

*Gasps* Don’t diss Canada! We have maple syrup and BEAVER TAILS!!
(For the benefit of you ignorant Yankees, beaver tails are a dessert, not actual beaver tails…)

I might be biased on this one…but…

I have to go with ExEx Blogger!

mcpagal – that’s supposed to be creative? – just juvenile self-deprecation in my opinion.

Still waiting on a really creative nick to enter your competition…then again this kind of ranks down there with the ummah’s urges for self-made cola, cheesy chips n halal chocolate bars.

How about some FORMIDABLE creativity like a letter to the editor competition. They get scored on making the deadline, fewest cliches, most proactive topic and readibility….

16. Amad

May 18, 2007 at 8:38 AM

Nuqtah, you reminded me of your own nick… nuqtah = dot… care to explain further?? It’s in the list now!

And yes Sr. Anon & Nuqtah: McPagal is dumb, but its funny, and it usually the most creative stuff is self-depreciating. It’s all goooood! As I stated very clearly, the only useful part of this competition is the book to be gained…

As for your formidable creativity competition, that is a great idea, and it may well be our next competition. Do you think though there will be enough folks interested in doing something like that? As you know our brethren can talk a mountain, but when it comes to doing something productive, we are , let’s just say a tad too lazy! :) But if you will develop the idea further and how you would do it, send us a note on our email (it is the “About” section)

ive always thought ‘exexblogger’ was cool so ill give him my vote in “full force”

May 18, 2007 at 10:10 AM

Asalaamu alaikum.

Well, McPagal turned out to be an educational nickname for me – I was thinking maybe it was a rapper from Pittsburgh – you know, MC Pa. Gal, LOL – but after a few comments went around about it, I went to my husband (a native Urdu speaker) to ask what “pagal” meant. Now I know more Urdu than just “atcha,” “nay,” “gee,” and “tikhe” (sp?). :)

I’m curious about the origins/meanings of ExExBlogger and nuqtah, too.

At any rate, I have to vote for our own AnonyMouse – and if we have a best blog name contest I will throw Musings of a Muslim Mouse in there.

19. ibnabeeomar

A competition on the coolest blog names would be nice.

I like Muslim Apple and IzzyMo.

22. nuqtah

May 18, 2007 at 7:40 PM

erm nuqtah…basically there are two reasons behind choosing this name:

a) Nuqtah means a dot, a fullstop, and this represents assertiveness.

b) Nuqtah also means ‘a point’ in urdu; so it also represents ‘making a point’.

Hence, in a nutshell it means to make a point with assertiveness. ;)

23. ibnabeeomar

May 18, 2007 at 8:11 PM

yeah i will have to TM “Lota Enterprises, Inc.” for our big business empire ;)

As salaamu alaikum,

27. SrAnonymous

mcpagal means son of a fool, don’t diss your parentage

28. mcpagal

May 19, 2007 at 1:19 PM

SrAnonymous: juvenile and self deprecating is quite a good description of my sense of humour, actually :)

Also I use Mc- in the sense of being a generic pagal person who also happens to be Scottish. I don’t use it to mean son/child of (and I don’t think many people do now anyway… the meaning’s changed now.)

In any case, I discussed it with my parentage and they don’t seem to mind.

Amad: McPagal is dumb
Now that’s just out of line!

Ruth Nasrullah: glad I helped expand your Urdu vocabulary! For the record, MC Pa. Gal did actually make me laugh out loud.

29. mcpagal

May 19, 2007 at 1:21 PM

Oh by the way, I vote AnonyMouse – for putting an ‘e’ on the end of a word and making it mean something different. That’s cool, that is.

If I had another vote (or two) I’d go for ExExBlogger or Lota Enterprises!

30. Amad

May 19, 2007 at 2:12 PM

Sr. McPagal, I was just kidding… don’t be offended :)

Hafsa! Jazakallah! I didn’t even have to bribe you! Woohoo! :D

Btw, i vote for inexplicabletimelessness purely for the number of syllables involved. :)

34. ExEx Blogger

May 21, 2007 at 9:35 AM

As for ExEx Blogger, the name was not derived from some digusting idea but rather that my blog’s name is Exuberantly Exhilarating. I took the first two letters of both words is ExEx Blogger. It also suits me personally because. I used to blog then I quit. So that makes me an ‘ex-blogger’. Then I started blogging again and that makes me The “Ex of the Ex-Blogger”, thus negating my ‘ex-blogger’ status and making me a blogger again. Sorry if I’m making things too complicated.

35. inexplicabletimelessness

May 23, 2007 at 1:27 AM

jazaki Allahu khair for nominating me sister iMuslim. :)

If you wanted to know why I even chose this name in the first place, be prepared to allow your brain to hurt a little bit..

1) you know when you daydream and then you think about the Hereafter? You imagine, for example, the concept of Jannah and Hell-fire NEVER ending…..it’s a timeless reality but you cannot explain the feeling! In fact, it’s really hard to even imagine the concepts of “eternity” and “immortality” because we as humans living in a temporary world are not accustomed to it. may Allah make us of the faa’izoon (winners), ameen.

2) Even in this life, there are moments when time is something that goes by so fast or so slow. Time is just a weird, inexplicable thing…so in order to remind myself how I can’t understand it, I just made my username it…

So…does that make any sense? If it didn’t, great, I think you understood it then… :D

36. iMuslim

May 23, 2007 at 6:56 AM

Mashallah @ ExExBlogger & inexplicabletimelessness for being so darned clever with their usernames. :)

My inspiration? Blogger was refusing most of my “normal” ideas for a username. Stumped, i looked around my room for inspiration. I then noticed my iPod sitting on the desk in front of me. And the rest is history. :D

37. Judge Dredd

May 23, 2007 at 12:01 PM

I like “Muslim Apple”.
I think it conveys a message of peace…..just my perception.
That’s my vote.

38. Umm Reem

May 23, 2007 at 11:11 PM

What a useless competition for such a valuable book! :)

In any case, I will vote for Muslim Apple. It sounds refreshing!

39. khawla hurayrah

May 24, 2007 at 9:20 AM

Assalamu’alaikum
Umm Reem: Glad you mention that “useless” word.

It is like telling the kids, “Hei, you guys, go out there and do some idle talk and I’ll reward the best amongst you with the best of reward: He came to teach you your religion” (smiley face)

Are we kidding our self into thinking that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will be pleased with us by naming with such nicks like “son of a fool”?

Rather, criterion for good nicks should be based on the Sunnah, not just cool and funny or worst derogatory?

Allahu Alim

Count my vote for Muslim Apple instead.

40. mcpagal

May 24, 2007 at 12:56 PM

do all the comments dissing my name get counted as negative marks? (sad face)

I already explained that I amn’t calling myself ‘son of a fool’, but ach well.

41. Amad

May 24, 2007 at 1:34 PM

apparently some folks did not read my introductory sentence… please do read it.

I still vote for mcpagal, its cute, its funny and it rocks… I don’t know how anyone can think of it as being ‘son or daughter’ of a fool…

No negative voting, so you’re still tops with Muslim Apple now!

42. iMuslim

May 24, 2007 at 1:46 PM

Rather, criterion for good nicks should be based on the Sunnah, not just cool and funny or worst derogatory?

Derogatory is bad, yes. But a sense of humour is not anti-Sunnah. I don’t recall Rasoolallah, sallalahu ‘alayhi wa salam, being offended by the kunya Abu Hurayrah (radiallahu ‘anhu), which is obviously not a literal nickname by any sorts. And i remember him, sallalahu ‘alayhi wa salam, calling a child whose pet had died, by the kunya of “mother/father of the bird”, as a joke to cheer the child up (i’m sorry, i can’t remember the arabic term!). So, perhaps the nick competition isn’t as useless as all that, especially as it seems to be serving as a bonding exercise, which in fact, is the whole purpose of kunyas. :)

43. dawaholic

May 29, 2007 at 2:58 PM

I vote for AnonyMouse.

44. Amatullah

so when’s the competition over? Or is it already over…

45. Muslim Apple

May 31, 2007 at 5:16 AM

Can I vote for myself?

In sha Allah, I’ll write a little bit about my nickname more than what is on my blog a little later today.

Not that I’m voting for these people but I’ve always liked the names IzzyMo, Indigo Jo, Hijabi Apprentice, Jilbabble, and Koonj.

46. Kate

I vote for Muslim Apple!

In which case, the competition is still on! :)

48. Amad

May 31, 2007 at 10:04 PM

Muslim Apple, sure you can vote for yourself

49. Muslim Apple

May 31, 2007 at 11:00 PM

Thanks for the votes of support. I actually do not have too much to say about my name except that I am a Muslim and do like apples both the fruit and the macintosh variety.

I am however interested in the reactions of others to my name. Umm Yasmin said it sounded “crunchy” to her and Annessa said it sounded “cherubic” and now Judge Dredd says that it sounds “peaceful”, ma sha Allah.

ASA
What a comeback… Muslim Apple zooms ahead to the top of the list…

We’ll keep the competition on until we don’t receive a comment for at least 5 days on this post… can the initial trail-blazer McPagal do some brazen stuff to get her lead back? Can Mouse convince others to vote for her on her own blog?? Remains to be seen… STAY TUNED!

52. Bander

June 8, 2007 at 10:57 AM

I vote for Philomantis. Considering the way it was derived, I think it is much more creative then the rest.

55. Amad
