American election day is tomorrow, November 5th, and Muslim Americans have a lot to think about when it comes to voting this year!

In this podcast, Ustadh Mobeen Vaid and MuslimMatters Executive Director Siraaj Muhammad discuss the shifting political landscape for Muslim-American voters. As frustrations with the Democratic Party’s stance on Gaza lead to increased support for third-party candidates and even Donald Trump, Muslim American voters must grapple with multiple factors in their voting decisions.

This reminds me of a prophet’s dua where he asks Allah to show him things as they are and truth as truth. I believe Muslims are not seeing clearly and celebrating with little to stand on. First, almost half of Muslims actually did vote for Harris. According to many analysts, Harris may have lost Michigan because of the Muslim vote but not other states. So, the impact of Muslims was very minor. The numbers are simply not there. The big numbers are from the Latino community who complained of inflation. And there were other reasons too.

Second, the 50% of the Muslims who supposedly abandoned Biden/Harris because they did not get their demands of permanent ceasefire and stopping support for Israel, these Muslims are living in a fantasy land. Support for Israel is enshrined in this country’s policies – Dems or Repubs. In fact, Republicans are more aggressive in their support of Israel (may be even twice more). Most repubs don’t even support a Palestinian state. Trump doesn’t even want Muslims to protest let alone of other things. And the list goes on.

So, while some may call this a visionary move by Muslims, I think this will hurt the Muslims locally and I am afraid the bigger Palestinian cause. I think we will know in the next few years (if not sooner) of the impact of this decision.

And finally about supporting the third candidate. Everyone knew she was not even going to get more than 5%. So, essentially a vote for a 3rd candidate was a vote for Trump. Our Muslim brothers and sisters tried to come up with a “strategy” in the battlefield when they were bleeding. Someone should have told them that this was not the time to define long term strategies but rather to stop the bleeding. We need to save every life that we can, survive first, and then regroup and think of long term strategies. We didn’t strategize when it was time but now we want to think when we are being starved to death. Everyone knows in such situations, the focus should be on survivability – not strategizing.

In any case, voting for Harris or anyone will not bring any solutions. Our solutions only lie in going back to Allah and to find people within our ranks. When we dont have them, we need to sit, suffer the immediate consequences, and try to improve ourselves for the future.

Democrat strategists are now openly acknowledging the impact of Gaza and angering Muslim voters, especially in Michigan. In addition, there was a great deal of depressed youth vote turnout and much of that is due to Gaza, this is from among nonMuslims. The idea here isn’t just about Muslim community, but pushing back against AIPAC and zionism.

    As Salamu Alaikum,

In deciding not to vote for the Democrats, some of us were worried about what our response will be to Allah on the Day of Judgement about why we supported genocide. By ‘we’ I don’t mean ‘Americans.’ I mean ‘we’ as individual voters.

Yes, support for Israel is enshrined in America’s policies. But that does not mean I have to support it, to the extent I would actually put my vote, mark my ballot, for genocide enablers and supporters.

We can’t take this lightly. We can’t vote for the slaughter of others just so ‘we may survive’ (and, frankly, although things are not ideal for Muslims in the America, most of us are doing far better than just ‘surviving.’)
