The Importance of Incorporating Qur’an in Our Daily Lives

by Zoha Khan

Between waking up before Fajr to go to school, all of my classes, tests, teachers, extracurriculars, homework, and family, sometimes I feel like I don’t have time for anything else. Least of all Quran. However, learning and reading Quran are as important as breathing and something we, as Muslim youth, should make an effort to do. Quran provides us with guidance, washes away our sins, adds barakah to our day, and can be done everyday in easy, effective ways.

My mother once told me a story about a boy my age who had a very wise grandfather. One day the boy asked him why he had to do Quran everyday. So everyday, his grandfather would tell him to take a bucket to a lake, fill it up with water, and then bring it back to him. However, this bucket had many holes in it and all the water would leak out by the time he got home. The boy did this everyday at his grandfather’s instruction until one day, in great exasperation, he asked his grandfather what the point was in bringing water if all of it was going to just leak through. His grandfather responded by asking him to look at the bucket. The boy did and he saw that the bucket was immaculate. Not everyone understands Arabic or like me, is still learning and gets frustrated when they don’t understand every single thing. But that’s okay. Even reading a little bit of Quran washes away our sins. Learning Quran also adds barakah to our lives. It’s one of the blessing that Allah gave us. After reading a little bit of Quran I always feel a little more peaceful and ready to be productive.

I always felt that I had too much to do and if I took out time to do Quran I would not be able to finish. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Taking out even 15 to 20 minutes out of your day is not only easy but also enough time for you to benefit from the blessings of Allah’s book. One of my favorite things to do is listen to tafseer of surahs while I eat my meals or ride in the car on my way to practice/school/home. You don’t have to take notes or finish the entire tafseer. You can watch or listen to 20 minutes a day and reflect on what was said. Reading a section of a surah in Arabic and then reading it’s meaning is another great way to incorporate Quran in your daily life. The Quran is overflowing with wisdom and guidance and is only a touch away on our phones and electronics.

This unaltered book is much more than Arabic words. This book is God’s words, a blessing, a gift , and something not to miss. Taking a few minutes out of the day to reach up to the beautifully wrapped book on your bookshelf (or downloading an app) is an easy way for us to receive the mercy and guidance from God’s book, the Quran, to add peace and barakah to our daily lives, and to wash away our sins.
