Welcome to the another edition of MuslimMatters.org’s regular Islamic Art feature. If you want to see your work on MM, then either email us your images to art[@]muslimmatters[.]org or submit them to our Flickr group.

This month’s feature is a focus on architecture-related images. How does the modern compare to the classic?

Dr Mehzabeen b. Ibrahim joined MuslimMatters as a blogger in late 2007 under the handle 'iMuslim', whilst still a struggling grad student. Since then, she has attained a PhD in Molecular Biology and a subsequent Masters in Bioinformatics, and now works as a specialist in this field for a well-known British, medical charity, masha'Allah. Somewhere in between she found the time to get married, alhamdulillah. She likes to dabble in photo and videography, a sample of which can be found on her personal blog: iMuslim.tv.

I really don’t like the look of Abraj Tower. Unless I see the top, I always think it is Big Ben. Rasulullah (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) told us that we will imitate the kuffaar in everything but to that point? In a place that is supposed to serve the Hujjaaj? Very very disappointing.

I absolutely love the spare look of Masjid Dhul Hulayfa, the Beijing masjid (representing both Chinese and Islamic culture), and the masjid interiors.

However, the towers that have been built beside Masjid Al-Haram are repellent. Looking at them, I feel like I’m living a bad dream and wonder when I’ll wake up. Why would these so-called monarchs build massive towers practically on top of the the sacred mosque, thereby dwarfing it and detracting from its majesty? What they have done to the holy places and cultural landmarks of Makkah is absolutely disgusting. My fear is that it will never be undone, even when the royals have gone the way of other dictators.

Wael Abdelgawad you are so right!

When I saw that picture I seriously thought it was photoshop or at the very minimum a photo which makes the buildings look closer to Masjid Al-Haram then they really are…
But no, these people literally built them on top of the Kabba – in certain photos you can see the shadow of the tower over the Kabba…

    May Allah forgive us.
