Readers’ Opinions: What Would You Ask For?

Published

Readers’ Opinions is a new kind of post on Muslim Matters where an author puts up a topic that’s important to them, or a question that’s on their mind. You get to have your say, whatever comes to mind. The idea is to talk, and to keep talking! It’s totally off-the-record and casual. Come on in and share what you think about today’s question.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Once the Prophet was narrating (a story), while a bedouin was sitting with him. “One of the inhabitants of Paradise will ask Allah to allow him to cultivate the land. Allah will ask him, ‘Are you not living in the pleasures you like?’ He will say, ‘Yes, but I like to cultivate the land.‘ ” The Prophet added, “When the man (will be permitted he) will sow the seeds and the plants will grow up and get ripe, ready for reaping and so on till it will be as huge as mountains within a wink. Allah will then say to him, ‘O son of Adam! Take here you are, gather (the yield); nothing satisfies you.’ ” On that, the bedouin said, “The man must be either from Quraish (i.e. an emigrant) or an Ansari, for they are farmers, whereas we are not farmers.” The Prophet smiled (at this). [Bukhari]

Years ago, I had a friend at university who was obsessed with owning a farm – even though she was working in a laboratory at the time! When I came across the above narration, I quickly made sure to reassure her that her dream will come true one day, insha’Allah.

When this hadith came to mind again recently, something clicked inside my head: Jannah isn’t just a place of beauty and marvel, where we’ll sit about lounging on silk cushions all day, drinking and dining (which is not a bad image, admittedly). It’s actually a place where we’ll get to converse with our Lord, subhanahu wa ta’ala! We’ll get to ask of him directly, and hear his response immediately – something that none of us will ever experience in dunya. A mind blowing, and exciting realisation!

So, my question to you is:

What would you ask from your Lord in Jannah?

To start things off, I will give my answer – which will not surprise anyone who knows me.

I would ask for a Science lesson.

Honestly, I love Science so much. I am so CURIOUS as to how Allah created the universe and everything in it! Studying Biology and watching Astronomy programs is a taste of Jannah for me. How does LIFE work? All these crazily complex biochemical reactions leading to consciousness and thought… I can’t even begin to dissect them! Only Al Khaliq knows, subhanahu wa ta’ala. And I can’t wait to ask Him, insha’Allah.

I was gonna say ‘OMG, YOU GEEK!!!’ but in all honesty, I am guilty of a similar charge. I love love love LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE books and reading, but really don’t get enough time to read due to other responsibilities, so I would ask for all my favourite books in a huge pile next to me.

And I love desserts. All the fattening, creamy ones. Cakes, ice creams, pastries…you get the idea. But for the sake of avoiding Islamic gluttony and heart disease, I refrain from them with an imaginary 10-foot bargepole. Sooooo…I would ask for all of them but without getting fat or ill.

Actually, here’s a nice idea…how about…I’m sitting and reading all my favourite books whilst eating my yummy, slimming but delectably delicious desserts.
    A tempting image.

But as we all know…Jannah is expensive. So we better spend a lot on it!

I’d ask Allah for so many things in Jannah!

I’d be surrounded by my books.

I’d have my own super special cozy bed with a warm heater as warm as my little sister when she is sleeping and me wearing my favorite clothes (my sleeping robe). I’d also have a special thing in front of me to hold my book for me so that i can keep my hands and arms under the blanket and it would turn the page whenever I’m finished reading one.

And while I read, I’d be served with all my favorite foods, especially desserts like magic cookie bars, all types of cake, sugar cookies, etc. And I wouldnt have to worry about crumbs or getting a tummyache.

And I would like to sit with everyone in my family and knowing that my siblings wouldn’t fight with each other in Jannah, I would talk with them as much as I want to.

Then we’d all go and visit the prophets and sahabah and all the other Muslims we had heard about and admired in the dunya but couldn’t get the chance to see them.

We would also watch movies with someone else to set them up instead of me doing it and the movies wouldnt have any inappropriate parts.

My eyes would never bother me when I read books or stare at something too long or glance at a light. And I would never have a headache.

Insha Allah that will all come true.

I wrote an article on my Top Ten things I love about Jannah, which can be viewed here.

At the top of my list of things I want is meeting all the prophets and learning about their names and life stories. (I love history!), but of course, I also want a batmobile and a river of Coca-Cola!

I also have a list of Aqeedah questions I’d like to discuss with Allah directly in Jannah, especially on issues of Qadar.

As I usually tell my Aqeedah students: Lets focus on pleasing Allah rather than questioning Him which we have no right to do, so that we can earn His eternal pleasure, then in Jannah we can ask Him all our questions directly.

And there are many other things I want in Paradise, some of which I can’t mention in public! :D

Allah Al-Musta’an! Don’t mention the ‘P’ word publicly!

Well I know women also tend to have hectic ideas for Paradise!

            Classic Example:

In an Aqeedah class about Paradise, when I described the slaveboys of everlasting youth who resemble scattered pearls (76:19), a sister raised her hand and asked, “But can we enjoy them the way men will enjoy the Hoor?”

I had no answer except blushing cheeks and a lowered gaze.

Great advice for your Aqeedah students, masha’Allah. Sometimes my head buzzes with questions on all sorts of things, and relief only comes when I remind myself that one day I’ll either get my answers, insha’Allah. Or that I simply won’t care about those questions anymore upon meeting my Lord – everything will just make sense in His awesome presence. :)

Seeing Allah Subhaana wata’aala the most beautiful gift. Collecting different kinds of fruits of jannah and presenting to it to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH :) meeting his wives and spending long time with them. To listen our Prophet PBUH reciting Qur’an everyday in his beautiful voice :) The one thing which I really like about jannah is there will be no health problems,Alhamdulillaah. We can eat so many chocolates without spending money. We don’t need to clean our house. Don’t need cook the food :P

May Allah help us to work hard for jannah. May Allah grant us the highest ranks of Jannatul firdaus,Aameen!!

    Amazing Article Masha’Allah…

If possible, I would want to know WHY? I would want to talk to Allah (SWT) for infinite number of hours and ask him every detail about his creation. Why the earth, not mars? Some others could be found in the Qur’an, but ofcourse as human beings we are limited by our finite minds. I would love to know WHY?

    ofcourse

Sister Bushra mentioned polygyny and Brother Ismail Kamdar mentioned verse 76.19; I want to give my 2 cents:

In paradise, insha’allah we will have whatever we want and take whatever we want. I think this idea is hard to comprehend. Gravity, pain, heat, cold, happiness, etc…We are limited by the “RULES” of this dunya. Allah (swt) gives us glimpses of Jannah in the Qur’an and hadith. I remember Abur Raheem Greene was taking about his conversion and he said “You can’t keep the cake and eat it at the same.” (or Something like that). In paradise insha’Allah that won’t be the problem. Men and Women will have what they’ve always desired and more. I hope I made sense…

    We Could Only Imagine…

I want to have tea with Maryam alayha salaam.

I want to see my parents relax and enjoy the luxuries of Jannah. They worked very hard for my siblings and I, and to see the fruits of their labor would be amazing.

I love flowers, a lot. I want my own personal garden filled with flowers. Within this garden, I want a pomegranate tree, bananas and pineapples.

My paternal and maternal grandparents passed away before I was able to meet them as an adult (may Allah have mercy on them and all the deceased Muslims), so I would like to meet them in Jannah.

I want to meet Imam al-Bukhari, ibn Taymiyyah, ibn al-Qayyim, ibn Uthaymeen and ask them some questions that I have from their opinions and works.

I love sour candy but I do my best to avoid it because it’s bad for my teeth and it’s too much sugar. I want a mountain of sour candy.

  15. The Shardul of Allah

    March 31, 2011 at 11:55 AM

Well, I first of all pray to Allah that He does not reckon me for my deeds on the Day of Judgment, and simply forgive me, and enter me in His Mercy. Inshallah when Allah will enter me in His Garden, obviously the two greatest blessing will be seeing the Face of our Lord, and the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (May Allah’s Peace and Greetings be upon Him). Aside from these two incomparable blessings, I will ask for the following things from my Lord:

    01. Many pet animals who should be able to talk with me, like we see in the cartoon. I will want a cat, a Bengal Tiger, a cow a camel, a giraffe, and many different types of birds, and all of them should be able to talk with me.

    02. Play cricket for fun. Most balls that I will hit there will go for six for sure.

    03. A plane like Air-Force One. Of course my plane in Jannah will be zillion times better than this Air Force one. That plane will be so big and so luxurious that human minds can’t imagine. When on board, the plane should be able to open the roof so that if I want I can busk in the heavenly sun or go though the heavenly clouds.

    04. A luxurious sea-vessel (Titanic ;)). Like my plane, the luxury and vastness of this ship can’t be comprehended in this duniya. With this ship, I will go into romantic cruise. I will have dinner with my beloved ones in the most beautiful romantic setting on the sea of Jannah.

    05. A sports car. I will take my partner, and will drive that car so fast and so terribly that she will enjoy but scream, “Stop! Stop!! Stop!!!”. I will say, “Ralax! There is no fear of death or injury in Jannah.”

    06. A roller coaster.

    07. Beaches, water falls, mountains (like Himalayans).

    08. Rain and snow.

    09. Food, food, and more food. No worries of about weight gain.

    10. Hoor Al Ayn, Hoor Al Ayn, and more Hoor Al Ayn. And both my ship and plane should be able to accommodate all of them whenever I set out in a cruise (I am not married yet, and the probability that my future wife would find this comment out is very low. I hope to have a monogamous relationship in this duniya, but when it comes to Jannah, why place limit? ;))

I do not know if the following hadith is authentic or not, but it makes sense. There are blessings in Jannah that are better than Jannah itself:

The Messenger of Allah (May Allah’s peace and greetings be upon him) said, “There are four things in Paradise that are better than Paradise itself – remaining eternally in Paradise is better than Paradise; being served by the angels in paradise is better than Paradise; being in the company of the Prophets in Paradise is better than Paradise; and gaining Allah’s pleasures in Paradise is better than Paradise itself. There are four things in Hell that are worse than Hell itself – remaining eternally in Hell is worse than Hell; the reproaching of the unbelievers by the angels in Hell is worse than Hell; being in the company of Satan in Hell is worse than Hell; and Allah’s wrath in Hell is worse than Hell itself.”

I pray to Allah that he rewards us with jannatul Firdaus.
What do i want in Jannah From Allah ?!?

The greatest blessing of the Jannah is going to be the pleasure of meeting our lord and then the company of our prophets and the pious.

According to what i know that once we are in Jannah Allah will bless us with what ever we want there and the blessings of jannah will be far more better than the blessings of this world. So…. i won’t ask my lord for the worldy blessings in Jannah as he has a better plan for the momineens.
But i pray that he gives me the company of my Husband , my parents, my children and my loved ones in jannatul Firdaus.

(Need to work hard and pray alot for it)

I SO love this question, Masha’Allah! Okay, so what I’d ask for in Jannah (may we all be admitted to Jannah by His Mercy, ameen!) is a VERY long list… and Allah Knows Best about that. :D

    However, here’s a few things:

    – my very own stream, with cool grass on either side, shade from lush green trees from above where I’d laze about… watching the crystal clear water flow by.

    – no need to wear Hijab!

    – wings to fly!

    – calorie-less , yummilicious food (like Bushra’s asked for above, ditto!)

    – my family all close to me (so this should have been up top! :S)

    – a home made of glass with fountains everywhere!

    – a trip of the heavens, first-class, front-row seats! ;)

In case y’all think me shallow… know these things are all AFTER wanting to see Allah(swt), being near the Prophet(saw) and meeting the pious predecessors!

May Allah grant us all the pleasures of Jannah that our hearts desire on earth, while believing in the unseen… ameen.

-I wanna run in the meadows with my hair flowing and a pretty dress on, like in the movies. But of course, meaodws in Jannah will be AWESOME.

“I wanna chill with the Prophets, drink wine & have scrumptious food with them while they tell me how they kicked kaafir butt.”

I would prefer to hear about how they handled themselves in situations like this one:

      http://www.islamawareness.net/Children/story20.html

These are the kinds of things that make the Prophets who they are, not the ‘might is right’ mentality.

“I wanna chill with the Prophets, drink wine & have scrumptious food with them while they tell me how they kicked kaafir butt.”

I would prefer to hear first hand the story of incidents like this one, which show what the difference is between a Prophet and a bully.

It was mentioned in the seerah narrations that there was once an elderly woman who fled Makkah with a heavy load of her things because of the befalling tribulation that, in her mind, was the work of Muhammad sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam. An honorable man saw her with the heavy load and offered to help. She was very grateful but made a condition:

“Don’t talk to me about Muhammad and we will get along just fine. Because of him there is no peace and there is trouble in my mind.”

They traveled together. As the time passed she spoke to her companion about the evil that Muhammad had brought. “He’s misleading all the weak ones, and the poor ones, and the slaves. They think they’ve all found wealth and freedom following his ways.”

When they arrived at their destination, she thanked her companion and realized that she had not asked his name.

“What’s that? Pardon my hearing but it’s funny … I thought I heard you say your name was Muhammad.”

“Ash hadu an laa ilaaha illa Allah, wa ash hadu anna Muhammadan RasulAllah! If you are Muhammad then take me take me back, for it is in you that I can only hope for peace.”

Aside from all the obvious stuff that we all want as belivers,

    1. I would like to know why He (SWT)made the universe so vast and expansive as we only occupy less than a hear breath of space in our Galaxy never mind the universe. and was thier in other sentient life forms out there, was prophets sent to them etc etc ?

    2. Again why such variety in creation of animals and plants in oceans such as those weired albino type creatures living in the depth of the oceans etc because we human and jinns the only ones with free will and accountability ?

I ask these questions because the sheer scale and majesty of it all just makes your brain melt trying to work out how these things are all interlinked to us all through Allah(SWT) natural laws.

    1. Infinite gullab jamans.

Infinite gullab jamans with a couple of ladoos and a single jelebi. Maybe I’m limiting myself lol but when you eat mitai you sometimes get this out of the world sensation. Maybe it’s just me?
Then an Ambala box, at a discounted price!! They’re really getting expensive nowadays, agree?

    2. I’ve always tried imagining a new colour – and failed. There are new colours in Jannah and again I’m trying to imagine the new colour to give my thoughts on the them… But I can’t see the colours yet :/

    3. Meet some people. People we all know but have never seen. Then chat and relax with them.

Wow this is such a deep profound post. Everyone thinks of it, but rarely do we talk of it.

This is about as dumb as it gets but I would want to ask Allah(sw)

    > If true love and soul mates truly exist or if it was a figment of the human imagination?
    > How much of the folklore and history really the truth?
    > If an atom really exists?

It’s actually a place where we’ll get to converse with our Lord, subhanahu wa ta’ala! We’ll get to ask of him directly, and hear his response immediately – something that none of us will ever experience in dunya. A mind blowing, and exciting realization!

And one that brings tears of joy to my eyes. May Allah reward you for this post, which brought to me with a new intensity the immense desire to go to Jannah and to converse with our Lord and His Prophets in their company! Sometimes one wonders if there could be any greater joy than being able to see and talk to Allah and those people whom He loves?

All I want to do is get there, then perhaps I would like to do all those things that I enjoy or want to try, but for which I do not get the time or opportunity in this duniya, such as paint (oil on canvas) sceneries up somewhere in the mountains with a breathtaking view all around me, or go for Bungee jumping in the fresh-water rivers, or maybe fly around like a bird (sky gliding)..or go wild water rafting just for the thrill of it. :) I would also like to ski on huge, snow-laden slopes – there’ll be no fear of falling or breaking something! :)

اللهم إني أسألك الجنة وما قرب إليها من قول أو عمل وأعوذ بك من النار وما قرب إليها من قول أو عمل وأسألك أن تجعل كل قضاء قضيته لي خيرا

    Bismillah,

I desire to have a look at ALL of my ancestors before me and those stemming from me from Adam (s) till end of time. To see all their lives

I want to worship Allah directly.

I also want to see moments in history…badr and death of rasool ullah…fath of mecca… Esa being saved and musa crossing the sea.

I desire Muhammed’s company and the Face of the Merciful above all else.

That is a great question; one that frankly I had never ever thought of. And maybe it is because do not think about it that we do not align our actions in the quest of it. For were we to realize we could have a chance to converse directly with our Lord (may He be glorified and praised), we would never ever do a single deed that would take us away from this reward.

Once in Jannah (may Allah forgive us and have mercy on us to enable us to enter Jannah), I think all of us would take a countless number of years just looking around us and wonder just where to start. Above and beyond that I believe we will take numerous years just hanking Allah (SWT) for having been granted access to Jannah. I think that one would fall into a multi-year Sajdah before his Lord for being blessed to even look at the treasures of Jannah, let alone to be able to see his Creator directly.

It would be everyone’s desire to meet and converse with Allah (SWT), Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the other Prophets. And the desire to be re-united with your loved ones would be there. For some, the attraction of the Hoors will be there, for some the abundance of wine, and for some calorie-less goodies.

When I first read this, I wondered just what I would ask for. Other than the obvious options above, nothing in particular came to mind. Then I put forward the same question to my wife and she immediately came up with an answer:

I would like to be on a tropical island and have a vacation, get to travel around without worrying about booking hotels, paying for expenses, etc.

Well since I haven’t made up my mind yet, I hope she has room in her plane for one more passenger! :)

I would love to see “videos” of certain battles that took place. Like a movie that was recorded of the all the famous battles and I could see all the famous personalities that I read about.

In Jannah there are a thousand of things I would ask for. These are some of them:

    1. To be able to spend all my time with my family and friends

    2. To know all the answers to the questions I have and to have hikmah

    3. To have a tv with no inappropriate material and only commercials that I like; home alone 5-1000, Kung Fu Panda 10000000, unlimited Starwars films with no inappropriate stuff, (this is just the tip of the iceberg)

    4. To have an xbox, ps3, xbox connect, an iphone 9000, my own computer

    5. my own hide and seek terrain along with other games and sports

    6. unlimited Deltora Quest books(these are the best books I have ever read) unlimited books that I love with no inappropriate stuff

    7. Yummy Turkish food, never feel sick, all foods I like

8.Last but not least get to see all of the Prophets and sahabahs

Those are some of the things I would ask for in Jannah. I really really really hope that I can actually enter Jannah.

I would ask about the fate of those loved ones who raised me and taught me but never uttered the shahada.

“You will be with those you love.”

That pretty much covers it. To be with the Prophets (AS), Sahabah (RA), family, friends. My grandfather, who was a close friend to me, passed away a few months back. Seeing him again would be such a blessing I can’t even explain.

But nothing would beat getting to talk and talk and talk and talk in an everlasting conversation with Allah SWT. :)

    Insha Allah.

Man… my answer is so childish :/

But I’ll be honest: I would indulge my childhood (and teenagehood, and adulthood…) fantasies of fairy tale creatures and classical myths.

I want to see a unicorn, and fairies, and dragons, and minotaurs…

And I want to be able to ride a bike, and run around in big huge fields without having to wear hijaab, and have a massive pillow fight with all my best friends, and snuggle in piles of lovely white downy duvets with all my favourite books

And the most delicious chocolates to ever exist, and they won’t make me feel nauseous even after I’ve even a hundred of them in one go :D

    salamunalaikum!

I will definitely ask something strange…..

I want to take personal revenge from all those arrogant’ s, oppressors, murderers etc etc… who made my brothers and sisters – orphans, who dishonored them, who destroyed their homes and families and upsured their wealth and lands.

I will line up, all of them whom I’ve seen with my little eyes, on the edge of the hell…then offer them few tightest slaps and a powerful kick and laugh at them as they used to laugh on us here.

Now this seems to be very interesting post in the form of the questions from the author. jazaki Allah khayr.

Subahan Allaah!! after reading so many sincere accounts from so many people I know and I don’t know, I could totally relate from where they are coming from. O Allaah please increase all of us here in goodness, Ameen.

    0. after listening Qur’aan from Him, Ta’la Iff I woke up from after constantly gazing at Allaah, saying Salam to Allaah and if He allows to tell in a manner that suits to His majesty, how is it being so eternally Compassionate, Merciful and constantly & lovingly forgiving, for us so much disobeying to Him.
    1. I would like to worship Allaah praying behind the prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam with all my progeny, and parents and praise and thank Allaah for his magnificence majesty.
    2. Since it will be 33 the age at which all Muslims would look like in jannah, or a totally new creation, I would want to look my best at 33 in khulq and akhlaq insh Allaah. Working on cultivating that hayaa and ikhlas..
    3. Being naive and sometimes stupid did help to certain extent, but would like to ask so many curious questions I contemplate and people who may know the answer may not be able to do it because of lack of time etc.
    4. I would ask Him to allow me to have the one I wanted to and stay married in this world with contentment.
    5. I would want to know if I did B instead of A, what would be the outcome at a certain event and How Qadr works in general.

Its surreal and endless.. I would ask Allaah just like I did not know what to ask for in this world to give me the best in akhirah, in akhirah would ask for what I should ask for.. Thank you for reminding about jannaah in such a beautiful perspective. Its time to strive for it.. :) Insh Allaah..
