Passing Away of a Scholar: Shaykh Abdullah Al-Ghudayaan

Published

Bismillahi Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem

Allah (subhanahu wata’ala) says,

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّا نَأْتِي الْأَرْضَ نَنقُصُهَا مِنْ أَطْرَافِهَا

Have they not seen that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? (al-Ra’d 13:41).

Abdullah bin ‘Abbas (radhiAllahu anhu) said: This is the death of it’s scholars, jurists and it’s best people. (Al-Tabari)

Inna lillahe ma akhatha wa lahu ma a’ta wa kullu shay’in ‘indahu bi ajalin musamma.

To Allah belongs what He takes and to Him belongs what He gives. And there is a set time by Him for everything.

With great sadness, we announce the death of the eminent scholar, Shaykh Abdullah bin AbdurRahman Al-Ghudayaan, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 86 years.

Shaykh Abdullah lived a life filled with knowledge seeking and teaching.  Among his teachers were Shaykh bin Baz, Shaykh Al-Shinqeeti and Shaykh Abdur-Razzaq al-Afifi (rahimahumullah). He taught his students most days of the week, after maghrib and after ‘isha and sometimes after fajr and after ‘asr as well. He was also a member of the Council of Senior Scholars  and the Standing Committee for Scholarly Research and Issuing Fatwas in Saudi Arabia.

In relation to the calamity of the death of scholars, Imam Al-Ajurri said:

What do you think – may Allah have mercy on you – of a road that is filled with many obstacles, and the people are in need of crossing it in the darkness of the night. Then lamps were lit for them to light their way, so they passed it safely, in good shape. Then another group of people came who had no other choice but to tread the same path. So they walked through, and as they were doing so, the lamps were turned off, and they were left in the darkness. Such is the example of the scholars amid the people. (Akhlaaq Al-‘Ulamaa).

May Allah have mercy on the Shaykh, raise his status, grant him Jannat Al-Firdous and replace the Ummah with better than what He took away.

Shaykh Muhammad Mukhtar al-Shanqiti (hafidhahullah) in this audio relates (mostly in summary)

    http://www.zadnet.net/shank/roya.mp3

First by making du’a for him and praising his work for the ummah, as the shaykh has been in the Committee of Senior Scholars since 9 years after it had started until his death, rahimahullah. And of the last students of the great shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim (the first Mufti of Saudi Arabia) rahimahumullah jami’an.

He talked of his piety, depth in knowledge, and being known for his asceticism. And then made du’a for him and for Allah to reward him and have mercy upon him and raise him amongst the ranks of the scholars of Islam and the Muslims, and to raise him amongst the pious, those who are amongst the company of the most high with Allah ‘azza wa jal, and for Allah ‘azza wa jal to replace what the Muslims have lost.

    Then he relates something amazing saying;
From amongst the glad tidings – SubhanAllah, I slept last night, and Allah is my witness in what i’m saying, I slept last night:

And i saw in my dream, a group of scholars

and (again) I didn’t know, I visited the shaykh 1 week prior when he was sick and sat with him.

But i saw, a huge group of scholars in my dream, and i felt in my dream that they were the scholars of the past (those that have passed away).

And i swear by Allah, that i saw him amongst them, and

I didn’t know that he had passed away, this was the night.

But I saw him rahimahullah, and I saw his face like a shining sun amongst them.

And i was stunned, and said in amazement “Shaykh ‘Abdullah?”

He was apparent from amongst all of them.

And his face was shining like the sun, very bright and radiant. And he was sitting amongst them.”

And I woke up and someone called me.. and let me know that he had passed away.

May Allah have mercy upon him…”

May Allah have mercy upon our scholars and grant this ummah better than what it has lost. Ameen.

The Shaykh was intelligent, wise and scholarly.

One by one our great scholars are leaving us. It is a sad realization, and as the years go by this sadness only increases.

I had an immense amount of respect for Sh. Ghuadayan, and viewed him as one of the greatest treasures of the Kingdom. His writings showed his mastery of Usool al-Fiqh and Maqasid.

I had the great honor to meet him a few times, a very humble and down-to-earth scholar.

Sh. Shanqitii’s dream is insha Allah a bushra about his status.

To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. May Allah increase his status, forgive his sins, and grant him Jannat al-Firdaws!

If you guys claim to have respect for scholars then i wonder why you ignore what they say. Calling him Master in Usool al fiqh and maqaasid and yet you ignore his major fatwa against voting? Doesn’t sound right.

Shaykh Allaamah ‘Abdullaah al-Ghudayaan (hafidhahullah) of the Committee of Major Scholars and the Permanent Committee for Fatwa and Research in Saudi Arabia, was asked a question:

Question: ‘Shaykh, the same question about mosques here which ascribe themselves to the Sunnah, however we have found from them some matters which are contrary to what our Shaykhs are upon; from them,
O our Shaykh, is that they encourage the people to enter into democratic elections; knowing that they encourage the worshippers to vote for a Muslim woman who is a member of a Socialist party. O Shaykh, what is your advice for the people here in Britain?

Answer: ‘By Allaah, Look, O my brother, you know that the Muslim must have an Islamic personality. He should not have a personality such that he just follows the people. What is required is that when the Muslim acts.. his actions.. the people will say: ‘This action is from Islaam’; and my advice is for the Muslims not to enter into these affairs ever! This is from one aspect.
And from another aspect; the Hadeeth: “Never will a people prosper who place a woman in charge of their affair.”
So the suggestion that she should, for example, be like this, no! She should not enter into this,
and you should not enter into this, ever. Not at all! This is from another aspect.

    Very relevant authentic hadis

“Indeed Allah does not take knowledge away from removing it from the chest of the people, but rather with the death of the scholars. Until eventually, no scholars will remain and the people will take the ignorant as their leaders, and they will ask them questions, and these ignorant people will give rulings without knowledge ( in another narration “based on their opinions”), leading themselves and others astray.

    Relevant ayats

    وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُوا وَكَانُوا بِآيَاتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ

    Another ayah

    Asalamu Alaykum,

Ina lilahi wa ina Alayhi Rajioun!!! MAy Allah the All Mighty forgive the Sheihk and may Allah have Mercy on him. May Allah the All Powerful grant the Sheihk Jannutul Firdows, Ameen!!
May he pass the trials of the grave and the sirat, Ameen

to Conserned comments: i think you touched a great point!! we don’t often time listen to Sheihks and their fatwas. I think we should all the time. Its true that they don’t live in the same environement as us here in the West, but i think regarldless of it we should listen to the Sheihk. Whats the point of having a sheihk with lots of Ilm and not taking heed from it. May ALLAH forgive us, ameen

@ concerned. We are not goin to follow every fatwa that every shiekh gives. Rather we abide by the truth (Quran and Sunnah) where ever we find it. Of course our scholars (May Allah reward them) have the best intentions in deriving the correct rulings from the Quran and Sunnah. Nevertheless, they are human, and thus they are not free from erring. We can respect and love the shiekh (May Allah have mercy on him) without following every one of his fatawa (that is if we follow another stronger scholarly opinion). My point is: I personaly do not vote, however I do not look down upon those who do because this is an issue that our scholars differ upon. Please have a little bit more tolerance towards your brothers and sisters in Islam.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’oon.

    mohamedb@live.ca is spot on.

Concerned: Whilst one applauds your reminder to follow the advice of our great scholars; the manner in which you raise this by reminding of differences among the scholars; showing disrespect for a living scholar (“Calling him Master in Usool al fiqh and maqaasid and yet you ignore his major fatwa against voting? Doesn’t sound right”) and raising random issues with highly controversial themes (voting) in a post aimed at remembering our beloved Sheikh is frankly distateful and inappropriate.

These are not times to nit pick differences within the ummah. Surely, we can just share this time together to make dua for our sheikh and remind ourselves of the frailty of this life.
