ثم أما بعد، عباد الله،

My dear brothers and sisters in Islam: We live in such a different time today, a time that is very well-known for its fast pace. Time passes so quick that we can rarely catch up in our regular roadmap‘ibaadaat and salawaat [worship and prayer]. Ask yourself a question: are you happy with your performance with Allah azza wa jal? Are you happy with maintaining your five daily salawaat? When Ramadan comes, do you make sure that you fast, regularly, and [put in] extra effort during the time of the month of Ramadan? When it’s time for other ‘ibaadaat – dealing with your family, with your spouse, with your children – do you think you’re doing enough? Or, let me put it this way: do you think you have time – enough time – to do enough of these good works? Many, many people living in our time complain so much about the lack of time. That’s why Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says:

وَالْعَصْرِ

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is swearing byوَالْعَصْرِ – which is time, and it’s specifically the late afternoon – [the] most wasted time in our lives. Driving from your work back home, or vice versa, you’re doing nothing but waiting on the streets.

We’re not so happy with our performance when it comes to our ‘ibaadah to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

Today, and specifically here in California, you guys [are] very famous for the businesses that you have around the place. Subhan Allah, I have never seen so many warehouses around the airport like I have seen when I was coming down to this area. It’s very famous and well-known for its businesses. And when you say businesses, it’s all about time management. If you don’t manage your time wisely, you’re going to lose the competition.

There’s going always be competition, and you will always have competitors in this dunya. What about the akhira? Doesn’t Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala say:

وَسَارِعُواْسَابِقُوا

It] means: compete with one another!

Shouldn’t you go and rush to the good work? It’s competition! We all have the same amount of time – age is different – Allah blesses whomever he wishes, subhanahu wa ta’ala, with a long life or a short life. But when it comes to the time everyday that you live, it’s exactly the same time – 24 hours day and night, it’s the same.

How much do you use of this time for Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala?

How much do you have in this time for Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala? It’s all about time management.

Many, many people came to me many times. They’re asking me “Ya sheikh, wallahi my life is horrible. I don’t know, I just wake up at  5:00 o’clock in the morning, can barely even pray Fajr on time sometimes, and then I have to go to work early, I barely even see the kids when they go to school, and when I come back they’re already asleep again. When I have the weekend, I don’t have much time, then I have to do such and such… So, I can barely catch up with my daily activities, what about my ‘ibaadah? What shall I do? Give me a program.” They say, “Give me a program. I want you to give me a program that I can follow during the day and during the night, in order to compensate for all this loss in the kheir and the ‘ibaadaat. Help me with that.”

I say – well, I wish it was so miraculous, the way you want it to be. I mean, people, they just want a magic wand to solve their lives, or an easy button. Whenever they have strain on time, they just press the button, and alhamdulillah, get an extra 2 hours, and they can do whatever they want. It doesn’t work like that in real life…

And that is why Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala made this a competition. How much time do you put in your life for Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala?

Is it going to be difficult? Well, it depends. Many people – and I’m sure you and all of us and me myself – we tried that. Every once in a while, we bring a new program to our life. So we start… bismilllah…

– 5 o’clock, I wake up 10 minutes before Fajr
– and then I go to the masjid
– and then I come back and do this and that and so on…

You try this for a few days, and then you see that that same program goes down the hill, and it’s not working. You fail.

Another time, you try. A third time. A fourth time. Till you become completely desperate – [you] say that’s it. It’s not going to work anymore, so let it be. Whatever happens, may Allah forgive us.

Most of our programs today are based on “may Allah forgive us.” Which means, Allahu Ghafoorun Raheem [Allah is oft-forgiving, most-merciful]. “Whatever I do, Allahu Ghafoorun Raheem. I cannot do better than that.” Why?!

Why would you be so satisfied with this low standard when it comes to dealing with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala? When it comes to dealing with your customers, you’re always looking for the best performance. By what? Looking for the best programs available in the market. Software, upgrade your systems. Hardware, you buy a new system. All of this to help you manage your time and manage your business.

Have you ever tried to program and upgrade your spiritual software? The hardware is one. That’s you. But your software, your understanding – the system by which you work in this life – have you ever tried that?

You probably need some extra help: manuals, books, [soft]ware to add to your life – to read and learn and exercise.

Well, here is the solution I have – a software that will help you in sha’ Allah ta’ala in this life, and hopefully in the aakhirah. This software is divine, and it’s very, very simple. I call this “The Best Roadmap – or Blueprint – for a Successful Career and Successful Life in this Dunya.” This is a good plan. You start with this, and that’s the best program you would ever have in your life in sha’ Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

What is it? Here is the plan:

عن أبي ذر الغفاري رضي الله عنه، و معاذ ابن جبل، رضي الله عنهم جميعا، قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم: ” اتق الله حيثما كنت، و أتبع السيئة الحسنة تمحها، و خالق الناس بخلق حسن.

The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam said in this hadith:

اتق الله – fear Allah

حيثما كنت – wherever you are

و أتبع السيئة الحسنة تمحها – and follow every bad deed that you make in life with another one that is better (hasana/حسنة), it will erase that

و خالق الناس بخلق حسن – treat people with good manners

If you follow this example, you will realize that this hadith is indeed the most comprehensive – the most comprehensive – plan for your life. It’s a roadmap to success in this dunya and in the aakhira, bi ithn Allah.

How is that?

Well, the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam says: [ittaqqi Allah haythuma kunt]. What’s the meaning of that?

I mean, I can tell you: wake up in the morning to make your salah. When you wake up, make sure that you wake up your kids with you so they can make wudoo’ and pray with you. Read your athkaar. Be nice to your wife. Help around the house. When the kids go, while you’re on your way to work, make sure that you have a good intention that you go out and try – hope that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala will help you to go through this day. Maintain your iman and your deeds, working for the best of your family…

So basically, you keep your intention conscious about what you’re doing all the time. I can put all [the] details now. Why do you need details if you can just summarize the whole thing in just a few words –

اتق الله حيثما كنت – fear Allah wherever you are

The start? If you want to have a successful program, fear Allah, حيثما كنت, wherever you are. The word حيثما/haythuma haythuma in the Arabic language means, wherever, whenever. It’s about time and about place. So it doesn’t matter whether you are at home, in the masjid, in the market, at work, in the office, in school – wherever you are – keep this in mind: fear Allah.

Just fear Allah. Don’t fear anybody else, fear Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. Make sure that you do the right thing. You do the right thing.

But here’s the question: who determines what is right and what is wrong? Can I use my own taste? [Can I] say: this is good, this must be wrong? You cannot. You have to follow what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said to you! That’s what is right, and that’s what is wrong.

عن النعمان ابن بشير رضي الله تعالى عنه و أرضاه، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم قال:

The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam says in this hadith:

“الحلال بين و الحرام بين…”

“Halal is clear and obvious, and haram is clear and obvious…” (There is no doubt in what is halal and what is haram)

“…و بينهما أمور مشتبهات.”“…And between both, there are some doubtful matters.” (An overlap; there are some shadowy areas, gray areas; that’s where most people fall into these mistakes.)

Many, many people, alhamdulillah, they strive and they struggle to maintain a good life – spiritual life in ‘ibaadah [worship] and taa’ah [obedience]. But they fall short in so many other things. They might not be committing haram, but when it comes to the doubtful matters, they always consider them “halal.” Why? Because again, their plan is, “Allahu Ghafoorun Raheem” – “may Allah forgive me.”

Many people come and ask, and they say: “Ya sheikh, this is haram or halal?” You tell them, “it’s haram,” and the immediate response: “How much?” Which means: haram haram? Too much haram? Or little? If it’s not too much, so he can just do it and say, “Allahu Ghafoorun Raheem.”

What’s even worse – people, they come to the makrooh, the doubtful matters, and they say: “What’s the ruling of this, ya sheikh?” So you tell them, well some ‘ulamaa they say this, some ‘ulamaa thy say that.” Once they hear there’s disagreement, what do they do? “Alhamdulillah. Which means I can still do it.”

Why do we lower our standards when it comes to dealing with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala? Why not take extra precautions so that you don’t go and fall into the haram? Why just maintain this and say, Allahu Ghafoorun Raheem all the time? What about شديد العقاب/shadeed al-‘iqaab – He’s severe in punishment. Why don’t you take that in mind?

اتق الله حيثما كنت – fear Allah wherever you are – that’s the best thing you start with in your program.

You wake up – that’s what you have in mind. I’m not going to do anything haram. You wake up, you go out, you make sure you do the right thing. So everything that you know is halal, you practice; haram, you abstain from.

And then if you don’t know something, you go and you ask:

فاسألوا أهل الذكر ان كنتم لا تعلمون– “Ask those who have the knowledge if you don’t have knowledge yourself” [16:43 and 21:7].

So, to maintain what is right and what is wrong in your life.

Many ‘ulamaa defined the word taqwa in different perspectives. And one of the very famous examples: Umar ibn al-Khattab radiya Allahu anhu when he was asked about taqwa.

[A man] said: “What is taqwah?” Fearing Allah – what does it mean to fear Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala?

So he [Umar] asked the questioner – he said: “Have you ever passed through some kind of land that is full of thorns, and probably harmful issues?” Harmful plants and vegetations –

He said: “Yes, absolutely, I’ve been through this.”

[Umar said]: “So what did you do?”

قال: أشمر و أجتهد

He said: I just fold my sleeves up, hold on my thawb, and walk carefully.

Which means: I look before I put my foot.

Do we do that in our spiritual life? In our daily life? Do you look before, where you’re going to put your foot? Or your hand or your eye, or your ear, or your tongue, before you do that? That’s taqwah.

Umar ibn al-Khattab, he said to him: “That’s exactly the meaning of taqwah.”

You do the same thing in your life. Wherever you go, you watch where you’re going.

Now, as we go through this program, we start with fearing Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. Doing our best not to go wrong. But do we have a guarantee? No, we don’t? We are human beings. We’re not angels. Which means: we are prone to error and make mistakes and fall into the haram.

Sometimes, we feel so much pressure, that we feel we have been forced to do the haram. No one is forced to do the haram – but that’s how we feel. Or that’s how the shaytaan even makes it look like. Saying, “If Allah wills that I don’t do it, Allah will prevent you from doing it.”

Ok, what about doing good? If you’re doing good, do you feel as if someone is forcing you to do good? No. You’re so happy that you’re doing it. Why? Because you feel that you’ve overcome all these hardships — you endured all these hardships – to come and make Salat al-Jumu’ah on time. You’re so happy and so proud of yourself, because you believe that you did that, and Allah made it easy for you, alhamdulillah rabb al-‘aalameen.

So, in the process of maintaining that first step of your schedule – we’re going to make mistakes, and the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam predicted that, and he said, in the same hadith,

و أتبع السيئة الحسنة – “follow that mistake that you made with another one [deed] that is better than this, it will erase it for you” –

Giving you hope. Never despair. Don’t you ever cancel that program. Keep going on with it. Which means: you’re doing wrong, fix it. What does that mean?

In any business plan – and you guys know better – in any business plan, you have to make [an] evaluation. Periodic evaluation – every three months, four months, every six months, every year – you make evaluations for your plans, to see if your business is going well or not.

How about what you’re doing with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala? Don’t you have to make evaluation[s]? We call it muhaasabah/محاسبة. Put yourself to the account. See how much good versus wrong you’re doing. And if you have a value going short, what do you need to do? Invest more in goodness and take the liabilities off.

The more that you invest in khayr, the fewer liabilities will be on your account. And that’s what the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam was saying to us: أتبع السيئة الحسنة. When you have a liability of doing wrong, that stains your record – just take that out. Do good, and Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala will forgive.

However, you don’t wait too long to do that good to erase that mistake. You make sure that when you make a mistake, you feel guilty about it, don’t feel proud of it. And when you feel guilty about it, say, “You know what, that was wrong, I shouldn’t have done that.”

Immediately, you go, and you look for something good to do. Give charity, make wudoo’, pray two rak’ahs to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, raise your hands and ask for forgiveness. Do something sincerely good that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala forgives this sin for you.

On top of that, it depends on how bad that sin [is that] was committed. If it was a major sin, don’t expect just any hasanah might erase that. Our ‘ulamaa, they say: it depends on the magnitude of the sin; that hasanah that you need to make, as an expiation of that sin, needs to be in accordance to the magnitude of the sin.

However, always remember that all sins are great. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala made great sins and minor sins, but you put in your mind that anything you’re doing is great. Why? Because it’s not about sin – it’s about against whom you’re committing the sin. Isn’t He the Greatest, subhanahu wa ta’ala? So even if it was a minor sin, it is still great. Wallahi, it is still great.

All the favors coming down from Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, and instead of being grateful to Him, we just send our sins back to Him, subhanahu wa ta’ala. And then we go at the end of the day – Allahul musta’aan – “may Allah forgive us.”

Change your plan, and make an effort to evaluate yourself. و أتبع السيئة الحسنة – whenever you make a mistake, in the process of fearing Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, fix that with a good deed, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala will erase that for you.

Now, not too many people are well off with these kinds of things in their life. Is there any hope for them to fix their life? The answer is, “Yes, absolutely.”

“What if [I] cannot keep up – you know – with the good work. I don’t know how to make more than five daily prayers. I don’t know how to fast Mondays and Thursdays, this is too much for me. I don’t have much money to pay, and so what shall I do? What can I do if I cannot make all these ‘ibadaat and worships?”

The Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam is giving you the least that you can do to maintain a good program for your life. He said: و خالق الناس بخلق حسن – treat people with good manners. If you cannot be the best in taqwa, fearing Allah azza wa jal, if you cannot maintain this life of trial and error until you reach that level of fearing Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala (of taqwa), at least treat people kindly. Do something good for yourself and treat people kindly. That’s what the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam said.

Rasool Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam كان أحسن الناس خلقا – was the best well-mannered man who ever walked on earth. Rasool Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala mentions his akhlaaq in the Qur’an for us to read until the Day of Judgment:

و إنك لعلى خلق عظيم– Indeed, ya Muhammad, إنك لعلى خلق عظيم, that you are well-mannered. [68:4]

It means: the best manners, the best example of good, well-treatment to people will be in the life of Rasool Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam.

How much [do] we know about the akhlaaq of Rasool Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam? Do you have enough knowledge to help you maintain a good relationship with people around you in this life? و خالق الناس بخلق حسن – treat people kindly, with good manners.

That’s the least that you can do.

What does that mean? How would people recognize a person who is well-mannered, well-behaved and a person who is wicked? How do they know that? From their actions. They see how frequently they do good things and bad things. When you see someone frequently doing good things, what do you say about them? Ma sha’ Allah, they’re very well-behaved. But if you see those people doing wickedness all the time, or most of the time, you label them with what they do the most.

Ask yourself the question – what do you do the most? Are you wasting your time backbiting others in front of other people? Wasting your time talking ill about them, taking advantage of the weak and the poor, and so on – what do you do?

Based on this, you can evaluate your own character. Because what is your character? Your character is just your frequent habits that you make, andالخير عادة / al-khayr ‘aadah: good is a habit. It becomes a habit to you, it becomes your character – if you’re labeled among the community as you’re not among those who are well-behaved, it means that you are not doing enough.

Rasool Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam is saying: at least treat people kindly. If you cannot do it [perfecting your relationship] with your Lord subhanahu wa ta’ala, do it with the people, treat them kindly, and Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala would love you for that.

Rasool Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam promised: if you do that in this dunya, you will be the closest to him the akhira. Wouldn’t you want to have this position with Rasool Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam? أحسنكم أخلاقا– the best well-mannered in this dunya, will be the closest to the positions of majaalis an-nabiyy in al-jannah, in paradise. The closest to him. Subhan Allah, one of the best rewards to be around the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam in al-jannah. So make sure that you treat people with good manners. When they talk about you, they talk about someone who is very well-behaved. This is the concept of dealing with people kindly.

And Rasool Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam even, he said:

“إن الرجل ليبلغ بحسن الخلق منزلة الصائم القائم”

As we said: if you cannot do these good deeds, just maintain good manners. He said: “That a person” – a man or woman – “might be just behaving kindly” – treating people kindly with good manners – “might reach the degree of the الصائم القائم: the person who is always in siyaam [and qiyaam]. Instead of siyaam, fasting during the day and maintaining qiyaam al-layl – night prayers during the night – just by being well-mannered…

There isn’t much that we can really do in this life, I know the time is very limited. Even for the khutbah, it’s limited. So how much are you going to give an effective message in such a short time? The same thing applies to you in your life – how much time are you going to live in this dunya? We don’t know. No one knows. I wish that we know…

But I’m sure that if we know, we’re going to misbehave. You guys have your final exams coming soon for most of your kids and students. Ask them – what is their attitude when it comes to final exams? During the whole semester, they fall behind on their studies, why? Because they know, the time is still coming, we still have time.

We still have time…Until the final exams. Look for them, they disappear, they go into seclusion. Why? Because it’s time how to catch up. Otherwise they will be too late.

Well, I wish that we have that same “end of time” in our life that we recognize, so that we can repent, come back again to fix our problems – we don’t.

So, therefore, remember, if you need to catch up on the quality time of your life, that’s the best schedule you have in this dunya:

اتق الله حيثما كنت

– fear Allah where you are

و أتبع السيئة الحسنة تمحها– (evaluate): if you do something wrong, fix it, and keep going on; (if you cannot do this, do the least…) و خالق الناس بخلق حسن– and treat people kindly, with good manners أقول قولي هذا، و أستغفر الله العظيم لي و لكم […] فاستغفروه، إنه هو الغفور الرحيم

[istighfaar…

… followed by second khutbah:]

الحمد لله رب العالمين، و صلى الله وسلم و بارك على نبينا محمد، و على آله و صحبه و سلم تسليماً كثيراُ، ثم أما بعد

Here comes the crucial question:

“Where shall I start? Can I jump on at-taqwa, start making my schedule based on fasting Mondays and Thursdays, qiyaamul-layl, giving charity, doing ALL these great, good deeds, ALL AT ONCE? I have tried that before, but I have failed. I couldn’t do it – I couldn’t keep up with it.”

Absolutely.

If you’re going to put everything on at once, [it] will never happen. Even [with] your business, you don’t do that. Why, when it comes to the akhira, [do] we miscalculate things because we know that “Allahu Ghafoorun Raheem”?

So where should I start from? I would suggest to reverse this hadith. And that’s what the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wassalm is saying. It means: start with good manners. Treat people kindly. That’s the least.

You start on this. If you have done something wrong against anybody, go and talk with them nicely – say I’m sorry, I apologize. Especially your spouse – your husband or your wife. Your children, your parents. Treat them KINDLY. They have the highest right on you – so treat them kindly [unclear sound; time in lecture 26:45?].

Start right there. Slowly and gradually, go and start upgrading. Add your ‘ibadaat between you and Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. And in the process of doing that, you’re going fall into mistakes. So you fix it. When you start doing that frequently, it becomes your habit and ‘aadah. Once this becomes your habit and ‘aadah, you become the mutaqee that you are looking for – the person who truly fears Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

IF you reach that level, here’s the good news.

Rasool Allahi salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam says:

“إن الله اذا أحب عبداً، نادى في السماء”When Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala loves those people, “If Allah loves anybody,” in this dunya, because of their good manners and akhlaaq and being so muttaqqi, fearing, “Allah azza wa jal would call upon Jibreel”: “يا جبريل، إني أحب فلاناً فأحبه”

“Oh Jibreel, I love this person” – man or woman – “so love him”

Jibreel loves this person, because Allah loves this person – loves you.

[ فينادي جبريل في أهل السماء]

Jibreel, immediately, out of that joy and excitement, he calls upon the inhabitants of the heavens – the angels – and he goes:

“إن الله يحب فلاناً، فأحبوه”

“Allah loves this person, [so] love him” (or her)

Now all the angels will love this person:

قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: ثم يوضع له القبول في الأرض

“And then the qabool” – the acceptance – “will be put and descended down for him on earth.”

Meaning, people will love him as well. When they see him, they say: subhan Allah, ma sha’ Allah, walhamdulillah rabb al-‘aalameen. When they come into a place, everybody competes to have them sit next to them, because they enjoy their company – because they’re nice people.

And then on the other side, the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam says:

“و اذا أبغض الله عبداً، نادى في السماء”

“When Allah hates someone, dislikes someone, He calls upon Jibreel:”

“يا جبريل، إني أبغض فلاناً فأبغضه”

“[Oh Jibreel,] I dislike this person, [so] you should [too],”

And immediately, Jibreel hates this person, for Allah hates that person. [Then Jibreel starts] calling upon the angels: “Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala does not like this person,” that individual. Now everybody will hate that person –

ثم توضع له البغضاء في الأرض

This hatred will be put down on earth.

Meaning, when people see that person, they say: أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم/a’oothu billahi min ash-shaytaan ar-rajeem. When they know that they have a business, they don’t go to their store. And when they have a dealing with them, they stay away from them as much as possible – why? “I don’t want to deal with this guy – because I don’t like him.

Choose for yourself. Where would you like to stand?

THAT’s now the goal. The goal in your life should be to reach that point – that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala loves you. What do you need more than this?

MAKE your roadmap that plan that will take you to this goal and success: Allah loves you; Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala puts love for you in this earth, in this dunya, and in the akhira.

It doesn’t require too much of your time, it just requires a few minutes to sit down and be SINCERE, and evaluate yourself.

This evening, before you go to bed, you make sure to remember this hadith. Hadith an-Nabiyy salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam:

اتق الله حيثما كنت

– “Fear Allah wherever you are”

و أتبع السيئة الحسنة تمحها

– “follow, now, that mistake that you made with a good one that will erase that”

و خالق الناس بخلق حسن

– “and treat people with good manners.”

[du’aa:]

bismillah walhamdolillah. seriously, this was one of the best articles/khutbahs i have ever read on MM. :) it enjoins us to what is good, deals with our practical lives in a way that brings spiritual reward, and it can be implemented by anyone, inshaAllah, with measurable results. alhamdolillah.

may Allah bless shaykh Yaser with even more beneficial knowledge in this life, with forgiveness of his sins and excesses when he reaches the next, and with Jannat al Firdaus. and likewise for the transcriber, too.

    Asslam u alaikum wr wb
Alhamdulillah- beautiful reminder. I was worried only yesterday about my husband’s job and thus the future- yet our future is the aakhiraah and not this dunya. JazakALLAH Khair ya sheikh.
