Salaam Alaikum

Well, with the month of Ramadan officially over (may Allah accept our good deeds and allow us to witness many more!), we have the chance once again to reacquaint  ourselves with the Book of Allah. Many of us heard it during tarawih, many others read it cover to cover, and those who were blessed by Allah did both!

So, in order to test how well we were paying attention, here’s a short ‘Quran quiz‘ involving simple facts that anyone can look up (note: the tajwid questions are based upon the reading of Hafs).

And as part of MM’s goal of increased reader interactivity, the FIRST THREE people to e-mail us the correct response will get Dar-us-Salam gift certificates

Bismillah, let the games begin:

  1. List ALL the verses in the Quran in which all 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet occur (all 28 in one verse).
  2. In which Surah does the Divine Name ‘Allah’ occur in every verse?
  3. List the three longest words in the Quran.
  4. There are eight species of insects (and bugs) mentioned in the Quran – what are they?
  5. List three verses in the Quran that begin with the letter sheen ش; and then three other verses that begin with the letter daal د .
  6. List one verse in the Quran that begins with the letter dha ظ ; then list one verse that finishes with the letter daad ض.
  7. Typically, the Quran mentions the ‘heavens’ before the ‘earth’, as in ‘Allah created the heavens and earth.’ How many times in the Quran does the opposite occur (‘earth’ mentioned before ‘heaven’), and where?
  8. Mention a series of seven consecutive verses in the Quran, each of which ends with two DIFFERENT names of Allah, for a total of fourteen unique names at the ends of these seven verses.
  9. In which verse does the meem sound م  occur FIVE times consecutively, without any letter in between breaking this consecutive series?
  10. Mention the FIVE prophets whom Allah informed of their coming before they were born.

Start reading and researching, and remember: these questions were chosen with YOU in mind, no detailed knowledge of tafsir or aqidah or hadith needed to respond!

:)

Regarding the quiz regarding the Holy Quran, I think its great. And May Allah reward you for your love of Quran! Surely there is no reward except Jannah itself!

Just to inform you there are four verses in the Holy Quran which begin with the letter Sheen and not three, See the ayah from Surah Nahl, Verse 121 Parah 14

May Allah reward you for your work.

      Salaam,

The audiotapes are just an extra “throw-in”… we need to give them away before they truly become archaic :) The CDs are reserved for the short-story contest winners.

If you already have your hereafter set (pun intended), then you can give it away to a friend :)

And no, authors are not allowed to participate, sorry.

  34. Emad

    October 3, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Dear Shaikh Yasir, Jazak Allah khair for posting this. I enjoyed filling out the questions, but if I may please ask a question: what is the benefit of these kinds of questions? I found myself spending about an hour looking for a verse that ends with the letter daad.

  35. RestingTraveller

    October 3, 2008 at 11:30 PM

Question about #7, does the ayah have to be referring to the creation of the heavens and the earth? Or just that Allah mentions earth before heavens?

  36. Yasir Qadhi

    October 3, 2008 at 11:47 PM

    @ Emad:

Obviously such benefits are not directly related to the meanings of the Quran; but insha Allah the very fact that you had to spend an hour with the Quran, reading dozens and dozens of verses, is itself a great blessing, no? And throughout the centuries, our scholars have given much more precise quizzes than these ones (you should see some of the questions that great scholars have prepared in this vein!), merely to show how precisely and perfectly our religion has been preserved.

    @ RestingTraveller

No, just that the phrase ‘earth and heavens’ occurs.

  37. RestingTraveller

    October 4, 2008 at 12:12 AM

Jazakum Allahu khayr. Just further clarification on that question, does it have to be in that order like earth then right after has samaa’/samaawaat? (like al ardha was samaawaat) or can it have words in between. (I don’t want to post any examples but I hope that makes sense).

  41. Naeem

  44. RestingTraveller

    October 4, 2008 at 9:05 AM

prophets by name!! :( I wish that was clarified, now we cannot change our answers.

One correction for the answer to the first question, it is actually Surah Al-Fath ayah 29 (but the ayah does start with Muhammad :)).

This kept me up one night in bed just thinking about ayahs that start with sheen. :)

One other piece of trivia, there is another ayah that start with daal if we take the reading of Nafi’, that is the end of Surah Al-An’aam (middle of ayah 161 for Hafs) – دينا قيما ملة إبراهيم حنيفا وما كان من المشركين

  71. AnonyMouse

    October 5, 2008 at 4:43 PM

Heyyyyy… @ question 9: “In which verse does the meem sound م occur FIVE times consecutively, without any letter in between breaking this consecutive series?”

But there’s a noon in between the fourth and fifth meem!

    @ reading of Nafi’
Shaykh Yasir did mention that it was all according to the reading of Hafs…

  72. Nazir Khan

    October 5, 2008 at 4:55 PM

According to the rules of tajweed that noon is not pronounced. Notice that question nine asks for “meem SOUNDS”.

Also, Hafs was mentioned but it said for tajweed questions, and I asked earlier if the question on the beginning of the ayaat was considered a “tajweed question” since technically it isn’t.

Lastly, I thought of some other ayaat for question 7 after submitting which also weren’t found in the answer page. These ayaat are 46:4 and 35:40, both mention earth before heaven as well.

    wasalaam

  73. Nazir Khan

    October 5, 2008 at 5:09 PM

I forgot to mention that answers for question 7 accidentally included 20:4 and 14:48 under the heading “The phrase “fil-ardi wa laa fis-samaa” when it doesn’t occur in these ayaat, although they do have the reverse order with earth appearing before heavens.

and btw, jazakumAllahu khayran for this wonderful challenge – may Allah make each and everyone of us Saahib al-Qur’an, ameen.

Can someone please explain how Muhammad:29 has all the letters of the alphabet. I couldn’t find all of them. JK

  76. RestingTraveller

    October 5, 2008 at 5:30 PM

^^That is a typo, it should be Surah Fath: 29.

  77. OK

    October 5, 2008 at 5:38 PM

    Assalamu Alaikum,
Actually the beginning of the ayahs are part of the science of Tajweed. The way of reading the Qur’an is dependent on the beginning and ending of the ayahs, as certain rules only apply to the endings of the ayahs (taqleel in the narration of Warsh for instance), and the scholars of Qur’an also differed on whether or not it is better to stop at the ending of all ayahs or to continue in cases where the full meaning depends on the next verse (such as الذين هم عن صلاتهم ساهون) in Surah Ma’oon. So definitely the beginning and ending of ayahs fall under tajweed.

Also, the first answer mentioned in the answers sheet is 11 letters, while the others are 10.

Technically, all of these examples in Arabic are more than one word. The longest single word from an Arabic grammar perspective is مدهامّتان in Surah Al-Rahman with nine letters.

    Where was the third “daal?”
I went through the whole Qur’aan, and the “Mu’jam” Quran index 3 times and found only 2.

    try these:
    Nisaa:96, saffaat: 9, yonus 10

    Mabrook to all the winners!

And JazakumuAllahu khairan, MM, for posting the answers.

As for all of us who spent alot, little, or whatever time to conquer this quiz let us keep our intentions clear, (*wipe that tear and sad face*)…..of course speaking to myself first…… and may Allah reward us with something much better ;) And Alhamdulilah we learned a few facts and tidbits of quranic knowledge.

    BarakAllahu feekum jamee’an.

Whether you got “a prize” or not, everyone who spent a little time with the Quran, in fact won. There were no losers in this contest, and that’s the beauty of it. The rewards from Allah are far superior to any rewards we could have offered :)

    Congratulations to everyone.

For the last question, a question to anyone who may know:

Wouldnt Musa (alayhi salam) be considered as one of those anbiyaa’? Especially in surat qisaas when his name is used as he was an infant and his mother was undecided of whether to cast him off in the river or not?

If anyone has a good answer, please explain, wa JZK.

Congratz for the winners. Can we get the answers now?

@ Yusuf the answers are posted up, (as a link) above the article.

By the way I got the answer to my question :)

Even though sayeedana Musa was mentioned by name the nuboowah was not explicit as it was mentioned for the others. I dont know if my explanation is good, but I understand it.

I had another question crop up, also with the insects question: in surat Saba’, on the second page with Prophet Sulaimans death, the “daabatu Al-ard” (or termites) is that not considered an insect?

    wasalams once again.

    Salam Alaikum.

I just wanted to tell you that the ankabuut (spider), isn’t an insect. It is an arachnid. I just wanted to let you know.

    Wassalam.

wasalam… Marjaan, good catch. I should tell you that you were pretty close to winning. Keep up the good work!

    Assalamu Alaikum
Ilmsummitee, Prophet Musa was not mentioned by name before he was born. As for the insect that ate the staff of Prophet Sulayman, دابّة الأرض literally means animal of the earth, so it is not the name of a specific insect.

    @ OK

JazakumuAllahu khairan for your response. Now, I understand the prophet questions but I still think the dabaatu Al-ard eluded to an insect and it could’ve been fair game, :)

Anyways, it was a good quiz. I think I enjoyed questions relating to more factual info like the insects and prophets and consectutive letter questions more than those of the words starting with or ending with specific letters.

Can we get another quiz going? Its doesnt need to include a prize, I just want another challenge. :D

    Jazakum Allahu khayran MM!

This was a very nice challenge; some of my friends and family are still stumped on these questions.

I agree with ilmsummitee, please have another quiz soon bi’ithnillah.

    hmm…i didn’t know that! :)

Well, the question did say ‘insects and bugs’ hence a spider would be included :D

    Salam.

I was just wondering, all those who entered the spider as an insect should be disqualified, then, shouldn’t they??

  101. Amad

    October 9, 2008 at 8:33 AM

Marjaan, a spider is a bug (and so it is covered). Contest’s over, prizes gone :)

You know you remind me of someone that Yasir & I befriended back in our college days. He loved to make a point, and insisted on it, until the cows came home. Give salam to your dad, and tell him not to be a stranger to MM :)

P.S. I am just teasing Marjaan, my niece :)

bismillah. i had the same reaction to spider as Marjaan, “not an insect.” and nope, Amad, not a bug either. a dictionary or children’s encyclopedia should clarify the point for those who insist on either term being correct for spiders… Amad, how about “small, creepy, crawly, or flying things with many legs”?

in any case, the amir of the contest determined who won (finally) and distributed prizes. all good. so, the point now is just to better understand the way things are classified in the Qur’an.

does choice of language matter here? in english (because of advances in biology) whales are not fish. but you hear a lot of Muslims talk about the fish that swallowed Yunus (Jonah) alayhis salam. is that just a reflection of weak english proficiency? or is it that Arabic might not make the same distinction between fish and sea-mammals? a distinction only made in English because the language evolved to accommodate the advances in biology?

  103. AmatulWadood

    October 9, 2008 at 5:59 PM

^Allahu a’lam. I looked up ‘huut’ in the lexicon and it says any great fish/a big fish, not necessarily a whale. Allah knows best.

  104. AbuAbdAllah, the Houstonian

    October 9, 2008 at 6:09 PM

bismillah. my point, exactly. :) whales are not fish at all. and most of the scholars who talk to gatherings about Yunus alayhis salam will use both terms interchangeably. the deficiency may be in the translation — Allah Knows the distinctions between fish and mammals, but the word in Arabic that we translate as “any great fish/ a big fish” may truly mean something like “very large creatures that swim in the ocean” or something like that.

    @ brother Salman

The answers are in the link above ^

Scroll above the article, at the very beginning and right after it says: “JazakumAllah Khair for the patience. The answers are attached. For any disputes, you’ll have to battle it out with Shaykh Yasir……” they have them as a pdf file.

    hope this helps.
