Most Muslims satisfy themselves with the outward form and practices religion offers. They know that submission to the rules – God’s commands and prohibitions – in the hope of being rewarded with the delights of Paradise, is enough to carry them through this earthly life and deliver them safely to the shores of the Hereafter. There are other believers, however, who have a yearning for something deeper; a need for something beyond paradisical delights – for God Himself. Read More »

Ibn Juzayy on Remembrance of God
Dhikr is for the heart to feel the presence of the One being remembered, by freeing it of distractions, maintaining its constant attentiveness and making it fully aware of what the tongue is uttering. For the best dhikr, and one yielding the greatest fruit, is one that involves the heart and tongue together; if not, then the heart; and then just the tongue. Read More »

A Women’s Guide to Spirituality in Ramadan during Menstruation and Postnatal Bleeding
While others will be busy in acts of worship such as fasting, praying, reading Qur’an etc., most women will spend a portion of Ramadan in the state of menstruation (or post natal bleeding), leaving them unable to participate in the aforementioned activities. It is not easy to stay positive at times like these, especially when we see those around us rushing to masaajid for taraweeh prayers, spending time in ‘itikaaf and reciting the Qur’an. This can lead us to feeling deprived of the reward of this blessed month and often, this feeling ends up decreasing our spirituality rather than increasing it. Here are a few practical suggestions of good deeds that a Muslimah can do while she is menstruating or has post-natal bleeding. Read More »
Beautiful Ṣalāh
He has had a very difficult day with a lot of questions echoing in his head, but he did not complain to anybody, as he knows there is only One who can assist him. Princeton’s Robert George and Islam
Princeton University professor and political philosopher Robert P. George has recently become a target of controversy, accused by some of being anti-Muslim. The critics have cited only the report Fear Inc. : The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America by Wajahat Ali which draws attention to the role of the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation in making grants to some vehement (and, in my view, misguided) critics of Islam and of leading Muslim organizations. George serves as one of eleven members on the Board of the Bradley Foundation. Read More »
