Imam Zaid Shakir- Thomas Friedman: Prisoner in a Glass House

Imam Zaid Shakir- Thomas Friedman: Prisoner in a Glass House In a recent New York Times Op-ed, Mr. Friedman posits that very few Muslim political or religious leaders are willing to challenge the violent ideology of Islamic extremists. What Mr. Friedman apparently fails to realize is that there is an intense ideological struggle underway in the Muslim world, and at the heart of that struggle is the effort of orthodox scholars to delegitimize the arguments of those who would use Islamic teachings to justify wanton violence and destruction. Furthermore, contrary to his assessment, orthodoxy is gaining the upper hand.

Washington Post: Anti-Muslim bias runs through the work of U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, former employees say Some past commissioners, staff and former staff of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom say the agency charged with advising the president and Congress is rife, behind-the-scenes, with ideology and tribalism, with commissioners focusing on pet projects that are often based on their own religious background. In particular, they say an anti-Muslim bias runs through the commission’s work.

Yet Another Harrow Mosque Protest: Stewards Wanted You may remember that during the last week of Ramadan this year, the group “Stop the Islamisation of Europe” (SIOE) threatened to hold a protest outside of Harrow Mosque, in

The Case of the Swiss Minarets (as Switzerland votes to ban minarets)

The Case of the Swiss Minarets (as Switzerland votes to ban minarets) Switzerland. The very name evokes images of almost heavenly beauty – idyllic enclaves of pristinely pure lakes surrounded by magnificent lush snow-peaked mountains, dotted with honeymoon-enticing chalets nestled within forests of pine furs towering to the skies. Beautiful, scenic Switzerland – it deserves its status as being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, and its cities are regularly ranked as being amongst the highest in terms of quality of life, in the entire world. Of course, Switzerland does have a darker side…

Aafia Siddiqui’s Brother Reflects on Ramadan: Blessings & Hope Amidst Pain and Sorrow

Aafia Siddiqui’s Brother Reflects on Ramadan: Blessings & Hope Amidst Pain and Sorrow Now, seven Eids later, we find that for each “friend” we lost, we were blessed with a multiple. Our isolation has been transformed into the support of thousands. We witnessed the miracle of resurrection as someone we believed dead was returned to life – not once but twice for us. That same Aafia who was once a pariah is now a unifying element for a whole nation.

Harrow Mosque 9/11 Counter-Protest: Urgent Advice for Attendees As some of you may have heard, a coalition of fascist groups are planning to hold a static demo outside the Harrow Mosque in NW London, tomorrow, i.e., on Jumuah,

UPDATE | Islamophobia in Perspective: The Curious Case of Fathima Rifqa Bary Everything about this case appears to be nothing but well-orchestrated propaganda. There is no sane Muslim who knows anything about his/her own religion, who doesn’t also know that individual members of the society cannot take matters of life and death in their own hands. Thus, Fathima’s case is primarily and significantly motivated by Islamophobia and anti-Muslim bias.

Marwa Sherbini: The Hijab Martyr

Marwa Sherbini: The Hijab Martyr What is the real meaning, the true face of Islamophobia? On July 1st, 2009, this term took on a face – the face of a young, happy Muslimah… “She was a religious woman who prayed and wore her headscarf, but she was killed because of her belief.”

Why Is The Flap On My Face, A Slap In Yours, Mr. Sarkozy?

Why Is The Flap On My Face, A Slap In Yours, Mr. Sarkozy? Whether a woman chooses to don the burka out of cultural factors or religious ones, – what difference does it make? She is making a conscious choice to clad herself in this garment. For the onlookers to assume that she was oppressed into wearing it just screams of naïveté and a purported façade of concern. Also, if the burka is restrictive and isolating, isn’t that the wearer’s prerogative?

Sarkozy Distracting French Public by Crusading Against Muslim Women’s Rights to Hijab

Sarkozy Distracting French Public by Crusading Against Muslim Women’s Rights to Hijab This low-level terror against minorities is not a new phenomenon. Historically, other tyrants and dictators have used anger and prejudice against minorities to help their own standing with the people. While Europe has claimed great progress in freedom of religion, time and time again, we see the rise of religious persecution.
