O Muslims, we should realize that giving charity is not an act to be done only when a person has “extra†money. Rather, the most virtuous type of charity a Muslim can give is when they themselves are in dire need of that wealth. This is a sign of our iman and complete reliance on Allah (subhaana wa ta’aala) and it helps us develop true piety and righteousness.
Waking up to eat suhoor (pre-dawn meal) in the month of Ramadan at an unusual time of the night and sharing it with family members is both exciting and enjoyable. Doctors warn against eating a heavy meal at that time. Thus, suhoor-time meal should be easily digestible, yet filling. Another important factor to keep in mind is that it should not require lengthy preparation. Generally, it is recommended to prepare the dish prior to sleeping and and re-heat it before serving. Khichri is one such dish.
While others will be busy in acts of worship such as fasting, praying, reading Qur’an etc., most women will spend a portion of Ramadan in the state of menstruation (or post natal bleeding), leaving them unable to participate in the aforementioned activities. It is not easy to stay positive at times like these, especially when we see those around us rushing to masaajid for taraweeh prayers, spending time in ‘itikaaf and reciting the Qur’an. This can lead us to feeling deprived of the reward of this blessed month and often, this feeling ends up decreasing our spirituality rather than increasing it. Here are a few practical suggestions of good deeds that a Muslimah can do while she is menstruating or has post-natal bleeding.
Things happen. They always do. You had planned otherwise but Allah subhanahu wata’ala has planned better things for you. The brother may have all the qualities you were looking for but it just didn’t work out. Or that degree you worked so hard for didn’t land you a job. It is possible that someone, with whom you planned to stay forever and raise children, left you stranded. Maybe you have difficult parents who just do not understand. Funds might be lacking and there’s a household to run. Grades are not what you want them to be in order to get into a certain professional school. Someone dear to you passed away or you just lost the “apple of your eyeâ€, your little angel whom you had to bury with your own hands.
I was recently contacted by Saffron Road to review their halal, all natural, gluten-free frozen Indian entrees. At first, I was amused by the idea of frozen Indian food. Growing up, my mom (my primary Indian cooking teacher) highly stressed on the importance of fresh ingredients playing a crucial role in savory flavors that define Indian cuisine. I quickly visited Saffron Road’s website and noticed that the company boasted of authentic taste and exotic flavors. Their confidence in their products made me curious to try them.

Many of us can attest to the fact that the spirit of celebration during ‘Eid-ul-Adha is subpar, to say the least, when compared to the Muslims’ spirit during ‘Eid-ul-Fitr. In fact, the underlying reason for this phenomenon may not be as secretive as we think.
