Khutbah: Living as a Muslim in a Christmas World

Published

This is an extremely poignant khutbah by Sh. Mustafa Umar. This provides a much needed step in moving past the dialogue of things like ‘is it haram to get a greeting card’ or ‘is it haram to put up a Christmas tree’.

We need to evaluate how we make our own holidays meaningful for our children. It also raises an important point in regards to converts. Much of our community discourse orients around whether it’s halal for a Muslim to go celebrate Christmas with a non-Muslim family, but how many Muslims actually reach out to new Muslims and make them feel a part of the family on ‘Eid?

Nice informative video. It is amazing that many people of other faiths don’t really know the history of their holidays. May Allah guide them and guide us to the straight path.

O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not “Three” – Cease! (it is) better for you! – Allah is only One Allah. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.

It’s not easy, especially if you are a revert with a family whom annually celebrate Christmas…

    May Allah keep us steadfast!

    Assalamu alaikum

Jazak Allah khair for posting this lecture. Very beneficial.

On another note, do you think Muslim Americans will ever get to a point where we can have a jumu’ah khutbah without an announcement about parking. You would think people who come to the same place every single week would know where to park…

      So true!
Their lack of manners defeats the whole purpose of going to the mosque.
This happens here as well in Edmonton/Alberta/Canada. People are always reminded at the mosque to park properly and to cross at marked crosswalks.
I wish people apply Islam in their everyday life.
Even in the workplace when men do their wudu I am told they leave a mess and never clean up after themselves. This is rude.

Guys guys guys! I love it how critical we Muslims are and that we try to put High standards but pls lets not make parking issue an “only Muslims” problem :)
Everyone who volunteered in Christian or Jewish prayer houses in the past Knows how much crazier it gets with them. So much so that they have to Hire and pay dozens of people Only as parking instructors and its still announced there as well :)
Just because Joel osteen doesn’t announce it on tv doesn’t mean we Muslims are more careless :)

But I love it that we try to keep up İhsan and Perfection for the sake of Allah :)
Just don’t fall into complexes, frustration and anger, ok?

I loved the khutba very much btw :)
