Governor Christie Defends the Nomination of Sohail Mohammed to the Superior Court

Two things are noteworthy about this video:

1) The appointment of Sohail Mohammed would mark not the first, but second time a Muslim jurist would serve on the bench in New Jersey – Hany Mawla being the trailblazer. This is in addition to Teaneck having a Muslim mayor in a town where over a quarter of the residents are Jewish. It seem that, Jersey Shore notwithstanding, the Garden State has quite a few pockets of Enlightenment.

2) Governor Christie's full-throated defense of Br. Sohail is not only commendable, it's downright implausible. In this political climate, to have a elected official – from the Republican party no less! – choose a Muslim for a position of power and subsequently stick his neck out for this individual – I mean, we're talking double-rainbow rare. Spineless politicians in Washington, DC and elsewhere could learn a thing or two from the Honorable Governor.

    Assalamu alaikum

Is Governor Christie running for President? I would vote for him.

Wa alaikum assalaam. A lot of people are suggesting that he should run for prez. He’s been a disaster for NJ. While I’m pleasantly surprised that he defended a Muslim official, he’s running a chainsaw to public service programs, education, and state employee benefits while at the same time protecting the state’s wealthy population.

    As Salam Alaikum,

    Although very nice of him

I wouldn’t vote for him because he cut state aid to college students significantly, and raised tuition costs which has made affording college quite difficult. But this is MuslimMatters, not fafsa.ed.gov lol, so kudos to him for supporting a fellow Muslim.

Both of you actually make good points. On the one hand, it’s a breath of fresh air to have a politician go out of his way to standup for a Muslim citizen. On the other hand, Muslims are, like any voters, motivated by a number of issues – economics being one of the foremost. Here’s hoping we can find someone out there that can offer both principles and basic well-being.

Why the animosity towards New Jersey? I grew up there. As with any state there are some things that are nicer than others. It is one of the most populous states in the nation so the good seems to outweigh the bad.
Your use of two cliches in one sentence rather than making a rational observation undermines any point you are trying to make.
I can’t see myself voting for Gov. Christie but it is refreshing to see a politician, especially a Republican, endorsing a Muslim for anything other than a long prison sentence.

this incident demonstrates clearly that the only way we can truly change the perception of muslims is by our own actions and interactions with people. people will attack us if we give them reason to and will defend us likewise. do we carry ourselves in a fashion that the community will defend us if we get attacked ? Sohail Mohammed certainly does. we need to have character of a level so high, that when people slander us, our non-Muslim neighbours, co-workers and friends stand up and say, “Hey! I know muslims and they are not what you say they are!”

Be careful of politicians, they will do or say anything for power. It’s a good thing he did, but one good act by a politician doesn’t really redeem Muslims. We have been humiliated, disgraced and attacked because of the acts of a few nuts that believed they were Muslims. The funny thing is when our nuts do something they are called Muslim terrorist, when the West’s nuts do anything (Norway) they are called psychologically insane, not Christian terrorist.

So far I havent heard many bad things about Christie, I think hes a great governor.  Remember that us muslims have more in common with Republicans than Democrats, which is a fact that many muslims do not realize.  Moraly we side with the conservatives, and the whole idea of leaving more power to the people (power to the states) was an idea started by Omar ibn il khatab.
