Formerly Mujahideen Ryder (now retired), I'm a Muslim American born in Brooklyn, NY with Guyanese parents currently living in Maryland working full-time as a web developer.
its sad that Sunni Islam is being associated with a product of such a deviant sect. the sufi’s are taking over islam, may Allah protect us, our aqeedah, our nafs and our intentions.
I wouldn’t write off Sufi’s in such a way. I don’t think they are taking over at all. While they are more likely to be viewed as the “moderate” voice of Islam more so than sunni’s, they are still doing excellent work for Islam in this country.
I think we Sunni’s have much to learn from our Sufi brothers, particularly because they hold material world views that coincide with “moderation” from a Western standpoint without contradicting Islam. We ought to be careful not to alienate them or ourselves, we have enough alienation as it is from outside of Islam.
The only thing that’s taking over is our laziness.
Let’s focus on the good that we can do and appreciate the good that others are doing. Look around you. Every praying Muslim who goes to this college, regardless of what you or I may think of its ideology, is better off for himself/herself and the ummah than the 100s around us who are loathe to praying once let alone 5 times.
Super excited about this college- it is a blessing for those of us on the West Coast. So many have benefitted from their summer Arabic program. My nine year old was jumping with joy seeing this on the news last night,
” Mama can I go there for school instead of Stanford or Berkeley” Alhamdulillah for that option.
salam,
Jazak Allah Khair brothers for the naseeha. I got emotionally charged. Refocus and work to improve myself is the goal for me now. Like the Prophet SAWS said (paraphrasing), stop an evil with your actions, if not with your tongue, if not with your heart. So i’ll make dua for myself first and for them as well inshaAllah.

You do know Zaytuna is Sunni.

Mashallah, that’s the spirit. Very few people have that kind of self-correcting attitude…. I wish some of it rubs off on me too :)
May Allah give us all a good attitude towards naseeha like yours.
