Jazak Allahu khayran sis, for shedding MUCH needed light on this situation.

Some of the responses show just how much of a gap there is in understanding between the men and women in our communities which I think stems from intellectual apathy/lethargy ..

Your pent up frustration and anger is very much legitimate and speaking out and acting upon these issues is what brings change. The sexism in the tone of some of these comments is disgusting and insulting. We have legitimate concerns and complaints that need to give rise to social equity and improvement for our communities. Stamping a label on us whenever we do voice concerns just reveals a fear of thoroughly addressing and solving these problems. These attitudes HINDER our progress. In simple terms for KS: you're making us look stupid.

Wa salam alaykum Umm Abdullah,

(It always makes me laugh when articles about Muslims in the U.S. insist that the U.S. is the best place to practice Islam.)

I think the U.S. has much good to offer an individual wishing to practice his or her deen, not perfect of course, but not the worst place either.

Assalamu alaykum,

Wouldn't it be better if he did mention where? I live in Kuwait, and mosques are built with separate areas for women, but the women's areas have the same standards (except for being smaller, which is understandable, since many more men than women pray in the masjid). In malls, the zoo, amusement parks, the Sceintific Center, etc., there are also prayer areas for women as well as men.

Alhamdulillah, finding a place where I can pray when I need to is not something I even have to think about. But it's one more thing to deal with when I visit the U.S... (It always makes me laugh when articles about Muslims in the U.S. insist that the U.S. is the best place to practice Islam.)

Wa salaam alaykum Junaid, welcome to the discussion more than a year later! Thank you for your kind words. Not sure we need more people like me just more people unbowed by the pressures to remain silent in the face of absurd and unfair practices.

Salaam-Alaikum!!

After reading some of the comments from the brothers on here, I had to express my opinion that I agree 100% with sisters. The masajids spend so much useless money on the 100s of 1000s of dollars of chandeliers, wall decorations and amazingly lavish carpets. And then talk about this ridiculous nature of 'zaroorah' or necessity of having sisters boxed into a 'penalty box' because they are fitnah.

Stop wasteful spending and honor the sisters and either allow them equal access or build a equal access to the imam prayer area for the sisters especially with this new inventions now a days called a TELEVISION and ONE WAY GLASS WINDOW. In the time of the prophet (SAS) the women attended all 5 prayers with him without separation. If there was ever a need of necessity for the lack of money or resources, it was the time of the Prophet.

Don't tell me it is necessary to box women into a penalty box because the masajids are spending millions of dollars on decorations that Rasool-Allah clearly prohibited but DID NOT prohibit women from the masjids.

Sister Ify Okoye, we need more muslimahs like you and Jaza-kallah-Khairan.
