Yasir Qadhi’s Khutbah on Dua | IlmSummit 2009
Share
On August 7th 2009 and in the famous Islamic Dawah Center in Housotn Texas, 130 students of knowledge of IlmSummit gathered for a khutbah delivered by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi. The Islamic Dawah Center is in the heart of downtown Houston, Texas. It used to be historical bank that was purchased in 1994 by the famous NBA player, Hakeem Olagiuan.

We pasted the below statement from their site:
In 1994, Hakeem Olajuwon purchased the property in an effort to turn the building into an Islamic Educational Center. After years of extensive renovations the center finally opened for public in 2002 and took the name of Islamic Da`wah Center. The first prayer was held on the last Friday of Ramadan, November 29, 2002. This was a remarkable turning point in the history of Islam in Houston. The Islamic Da`wah Center houses the first Mosque in Houston downtown. It is also the first center dedicated for Da`wah in Houston. The opulent three- story facility includes over 40,000 square feet. As you enter the building from the Travis side entrance, it will lead you to the main prayer hall. From the ground level, a staircase takes you underground to the basement level, which has a gathering area, meeting rooms, classrooms, guest suit, offices, recreational facility, kitchen, and a library of Islamic literature.

well, he writes on a blog called muslimmatters.org
but no, we don’t have all his audio lectures nor a comprehensive database of all his published works here.
MashAllah as alway’s Sh. Yasir leaves a profound impact on us…I still remember this Khutbah and some statements the Shaykh made sometimes ring through my head. Barakah Allahu Feek Ya Shaykhanah.
Very nice building, sadly when you enter you are treated poorly by the admin staff that works it like an office building. The parking lot is renting out to the near-by club over the weekends so you are sharing space with naked women and drunk men. You can’t pray Isha there because they close shortly after Asr. It was a very nice gift by our Bro, May Allah reward him Ameen. Sadly, it’s not been used for what it was intended for. Sorry I am off topic.
So .. Sister… what do you suggest as a solution to the problems that you mentioned above?
As’salaam Alaikum Haytham,
This is Sr. Shahada from Houston. I’ve spoken to administration, tried to host an Open House and then a dawah booth on the side street. Everything is write a letter and wait…no follow up on their part. I even wanted to speak to Br. Hakeem Olagiuan since my husband has had contact with him. Ultimately, it is what they want it to be and since I worked and went to school downtown it would have been easy for me to go there and pray and sit and read on some days, didn’t happen. Homeless sleep on the front steps at night, shared parking which is an agreement between them and other establishments. I am not sure I legally have any grounds to do anything regarding that – do you?
Wa Alaykom Assalam Sr. Shahada..
I personally know the guys in the administration and agree that there are some issues.. maybeyou can try to communicate things with them again? Sometimes people forget you know!
Also, contacting Hakeem directly is an awesome idea. His whole dream was to turn this in to a dawah center … like really
May Allah make it easy on you… ameen.
Wa’alaikum As’Salaam,
Yes, you are right I could try again. Often people do tend to forget especially when running a masjid that provide various other functions. I ask Allah azza wajal to reward their efforts, Ameen.
The recording doesn’t do justice to what it sounded like in person.
This khutbah was awesome, alhamdulillah.
Assalamu-Alaykum,
Sorry for also adding this to the off topic comment, but I was really glad to read Sis. Shahdah’s post, that I’m not the only one who also felt this way. I totally understand what you mean. I am also a student down at UHD and going to the dawah center is just a great opportunity, but their service and facility is just run so differently. Lots of times the Sisters section is just locked and then I have to go to the brother’s side and wait for someone to come unlock the door for me. Then one time when I went, they told me there are people inside cleaning the bathrooms and stuff in the sisters side was being cleaned so I should wait outside, but then I never saw anyone come in and out form the sister’s side? Also when the days Maghrib salah was starting around 5:30 or a little later they would still close at 5:30 and I would see people praying outside on the stairs of the Masjid! I’m thinking they could have at least stayed open for an extra 5-10 min. prayed Maghrib and then closed. Sometimes I also would like to just relax or study in the prayer hall but it just seems wierd like I’m not supposed to be there. Well, I thought I should share my experience and feelings as well. I had no idea that this has been going on and I’m not the first to feel this way about it. I also appreciate that you did something about it, I honestly haven’t. JazaKillahu-Khairan! Maybe this will help me to say something to them?… we’ll see.
As’Salaam Alaikum,
And I’m so glad you commented because I was starting to feel like I was making a big issue about it. But from the first day I went to this Masjid I have felt like I shouldn’t be there. My husband once called and asked what time do you guys pray said salah in jamah – the brother on the phones’ reply was you should already know if you pray regularly. To which my husband said Allahu Akbar – I live in the North, and just asked a simple question ahkee has nothing to do with “praying regularly”. Ha!
So, May Allah bring about a situation in which His house is used in the manner for which it was intended, Ameen.
MashAllah, the geem is strong in this one
Mashallah very beautiful Khutbah!
