Alhamdulillah, there are a couple stories floating around the Internet of Jews who saw Muslims do something kind and it really touched them and dispelled all their stereotypes. One was about a Muslim who simply picked up a piece of litter everyone had ignored while crossing the street, and that prompted a Jewish guy who saw this to write something for a newspaper which published the story. Another was of a Muslim taxi cab driver who returned some diamonds a Jewish diamond dealer had left in his taxi. In both stories the respect for Islam only grew.

IbnAbeeOmar asks if it will ever be enough? It does not matter as we are working for Allah. However I see your point.

We will know when it's enough when people start converting to islam because of the Islam they see in our actions. :)

Getting involved in mainstream society and not just masjid-life is a start to that end, and for that, we need shuyookh and other community leaders to connect us into everyday society and set the right standard and model for us all, bi idhni Allah.

This is why Americans are so excited about the candidacy of Barack Obama: Obama holds out a chance for redemption.

I don't know if Dr. Jackson is speaking for himself here, or just the wider perception in the community. Either way Obama doesn't hold any chance of redemption for the American Muslims any more than Bush did in 2000. Muslims need to very careful and avoid falling for all the Messianic propaganda being put out by the Obama campaign. (As Justin Raimondo reminds us, Barack Obama is the "Establishment Messiah.") Though I don't agree, I can understand Muslims voting for Obama out of the perception that he is the lesser of the two evils, but this all he should be in our eyes: a recognition that he is evil (though to a lesser degree than his opponent) and that he is not a Messiah or someone who is going to solve all or any of our problems.

I am very pleased to see that more and more are taking up the issue of Islamophobia. We must continue to press other Americans to take up this issue as this is THE racism of our times. IbnAbeeOmar asks if it will ever be enough? It does not matter as we are working for Allah. However I see your point. There are hardly a people working harder in humanitarian work than Muslim-Americans
