muhammad-ali.jpgIt was hate, not religion, that motivated the horrible acts of September 11…

Nothing could be more unAmerican than to respond to mindless hatred with blind vengeance [Will Smith]

Yes, 9/11 is a good opportunity to remember the innocent victims of terrorism. We all know the approx. number and some of the names of people killed on 9/11, but how many of us know the number and names of those killed in the American\Israeli terrorist attacks on Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Palestine, and Lebanon? Who remembers those innocent men, women, and children who were killed, widowed, and orphaned? What yearly tributes are there for them?

Abu Umar, we get your angle, with all your comments on MM. Sometimes we have a tendency to wrap everything up, and it is this tendency to conflate that is counterproductive to all purposes of healing and moving on.

There is no need to conflate everything. It is not necessary to mention all injustices, when talking about one. We have talked about injustices all over the world on these pages. Today, we are talking about the victims of 9/11, because today is september 11. You can express your diversions and tangents another post when the opportunity arises that we talk about your subject, insha’Allah.

Otherwise be forewarned that we will generously moderate unrelated tangents.

Amad I love you for sake of Allah. You are right that we need not conflate. So talking about 9/11 there is no need for talking about other issues now. Similarly, when talking about sister Afia, and Sarah Palin, we should not talk about OBL and Al Qaida.

For now make dua for me and my family, I am under mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Ike. Would be leaving for Dallas. Wassalam.

Akhi Amad I just want to say that I am slightly offended with the way you addressed akh Abu Umar.

I dont know you akh and neither do I know Abu Umar.

All brother Abu Umar did was make a very good point which he is intitled to, and there was no need for you to reply back with such conceited personal comments.

Just so you know, I love you both for the sake of Allah.

Very well brother Amad. I apologize for getting of topic, though I hope you can understand my point. But coming back to 9/11 MSNBC commentator Keith Olbermann had a very good piece last nigh on the continued and cynical neocon use of the attacks to further their political agenda:

On September 11, 1973 a military coup d’état supported by the administration of President Richard M. Nixon in the United States put an end to the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende in Chile. After the coup Nixon supported both diplomatically and economically the military Junta that seized power. The junta, led by Augusto Pinochet, arrested, tortured and murdered thousands of Allende’s supporters.

Umar – i am deeply offended at your comment. I am a New Yorker – and the events of 9/11 tragically affected me directly. Muslims also died in the WTC. We give a crap – because this is our land – we too are Americans.

That doesnt take away from any of the other injustices you mentioned. You are absolutely right, those are travesties and we should be talking about these issues more – and we should remember all those people in our duas as well. “Giving a crap” about these tragedies- aren’t mutually exclusive.

Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality. If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail, so what? We’ve been in jail for 400 years.

Let’s flip this on its head, Umar:

“Who gives a crap about the Muslims dying in Iraq, Afghanistan… they brought it upon themselves… most are just terrorists…we should nuke all of them”

I think we would all be deeply offended by this statement repeated by many Islamophobes. So, we should think for others, what we want for ourselves. If we don’t have apathy for others, we shouldn’t expect it for ourselves. So, Umar, we do “give a crap” about all those innocent civilians who died on 9/11.

As far as dedicating posts to the other injustices, I am assuming you are new on MM, otherwise you will find a lot of stuff all over dealing with Iraq, Gujarat, China, Ali Timimi, etc. Pls spend a little more time researching. Injustice is injustice, wherever it is served.
