Islam does not believe in the unity of religions as they are it holds that there is a unity of message of the Prophets (a) and that is that Allah (swt) in One in essence, names and attributes and actions. The Message of Tauhid (Monotheism) was one and the same message preached by all the Prophets (saw) except that with time the message was corrupted and the Books that were revealed were not preserved and people became distant from the original languages that the Message of Tauhid was revealed. It is only al-Islam which can hold that its Book remains in tact since it was revealed and that its language is still spoken and understood.

On a practical level we see that the language of the Vedas of the Hindus which is Sankrit is dead now.

The Hebrew and Aramaic of the Torah and Gospel are dead languages and even the Greek used to write the Gospel is dead and the Latin of the official translation of the Bible used by the Catholics early last century is a dead language. Even the language of the main Buddhist texts is not in use today not to mention that what is relied upon are translations.

It is only the Books of Islam that are preserved in a living language understandable and spoken today with little to no change.

AS

It is not surprising to hear a priest say such. In fact, when I studied to be a Catholic priest there was a trend of some priests to be Buddhist and others to be Hindu like the famous Thomas Merton. There is a similar trend among others people like Joseph Campbell and Huston Smith and others.

For many Christianity has ceased to spiritually and practically and intellectually viable in the modern world.

There is a trend among some traditionalists that goes by the name of perrenialism except that perrenialism says one should stay in one's religion and practice it to achieve salvation, enlightenment etc. and is in essence a defense of traditional religions and an argument against modernity.

Seyyed Hussein Nasr
Rene Guenon
William Chittick
Jacob Needleman
Martin Lings and many others are of this school that was also supported by Friztjof Schuon.

If you look at the seriousseekers website you will find audio of Martin Lings and others discussing the "wisdom tradition"

All in all, Islam is the final revelation and the Prophet is the final Prophet (saw) answer are charged with da'wah and tolerance but not at the cost of truth.

As salaam alaikum.

Good video --I saw it a few weeks ago and it does a great of getting time's point across.

By time, Verily Man is in loss, Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and join together in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.

Come by insha'Allah if you have some time to read... I have fresh work up on my blog daily.

Ma'as salaama,
